Why filing your taxes is the first financial step that actually matters + MORE Apr 24th

For most of my adult life, I had never paid personal income tax—not because I was avoiding it, but because I lived and worked in the Middle East, where that’s simply not part of the system. When we started planning our move to Canada, the idea of paying taxes was, if I’m being honest, intimida.... More »

DETROIT – Volkswagen’s new seven-passenger SUV will go on sale in the U.S. in 2016.
The German automaker’s CEO, Martin Winterkorn, confirmed the timing of the new vehicle Sunday on the eve of the Detroit auto show.
Plants in Chattanooga, Tenn., and Puebla, Mexico, are vying to build the SUV.
Winterkorn said the new SUV will be part of a five-year, $7 billion investment in North America. The investment also includes the production of the new Volkswagen Golf, which begins Tuesday in Puebla. The Golf goes on sale in the U.S. this summer.
Winterkorn said Volkswagen is committed to its goal of selling 1 million vehicles per year in the U.S. by 2018. The company sold just over half that many in 2013.

Today’s post is a guest post from Barry Choi, a DIY investor who, when not busy working as a Director for CityNews Toronto, is passionate about all things personal finance.  You can follow Barry on Twitter @BarryChoi.
The New Year is a great time to look at your finances and think about what goals you may have for the year ahead.  Arriving just in time to do just that is Preet Banerjee’s book Stop Over-Thinking Your Money! The Five Simple Rules of Financial Success.  Full disclosure, I have appeared on Preet’s podcast and I consider him to be a personal friend.
When it comes to personal finance it’s easy for many of us to get lost in translation but don’t worry about that when you read Stop Over-Thinking Your Money!  I work in a TV newsroom and I read way too many press releases that are boring and filled with hard to understand jargon.  TV folks are trained to tell stories as if we’re talking one-on-one with our viewers, a difficult skill to master, and Preet does an excellent job keeping us in the conversation…

TORONTO – The lack of new foreign players means Tuesday’s wireless auction likely won’t bring in as much revenue as expected to federal coffers — or the increased competition that Canadian consumers want, experts say.
The previous auction in 2008 raised $4.3 billion and ushered in a host of new players: Wind Mobile, Mobilicity, Public Mobile, Videotron and Eastlink.
But the Canadian wireless market continues to be dominated by Bell (TSX:BCE), Rogers (TSX:RCI.B) and Telus (TSX:T), with a total of about 25 million subscribers.
Since then, Mobilicity and Wind Mobile have gone up for sale. Public Mobile has been sold to Telus.
There were hopes of foreign competition to shake up the country’s wireless industry, but they died last September when U.S. giant Verizon dropped its plans for expansion north.
If the federal Conservatives want more competition in the future, they’ll have to drop all restrictions to foreign investment, even if it means going up against the country’s dominant players, said Michael Geist, a law professor at the University of Ottawa…
