Either save more or plan for lower retirement incomeLONDON – The senior deputy governor of the Bank of Canada says investors and those in the financial system need to adapt to the reality of slower growth and associated low interest rates.
In a speech to the Official Monetary and Financial Institutions Forum in London, England, Carolyn Wilkins said Wednesday that means changing investment strategies and risk-management practices to reflect lower rates of return.
“For households, this may mean saving more before retirement or planning for a lower post-retirement income,” Wilkins said in a prepared text of her speech.

Luxury returns in the bargain binCheap goods, expensive stocks. And vice versa. A Louis Vuitton bag says wealth, but discount retailers are the ones delivering it to investors. Maybe it’s time to switch places? The S&P Global Luxury index, which is comprised of 80 of the largest luxury companies, currently sports a price-to-book ratio of 2.49—its lowest level in three years. Compare that to Dollarama and Dollar General, whose book values are more than 600% and 25%, respectively, above their historical averages. Luxury is starting to look more the bargain.

TORONTO – A report by Sotheby’s International Realty Canada says sales of luxury homes in Vancouver cooled in July and August, however the high-end market picked up in the Toronto area.
The real estate firm says the new foreign buyer tax introduced in Vancouver in August has injected uncertainty into that city’s market, which is expected to moderate headed into the fall.
Sotheby’s says escalating interest from foreign buyers as well as strong local market fundamentals are expected to boost the Toronto area market.
Sales of single-family homes over $1 million in Vancouver in July fell 30 per cent compared with a year ago to 193.
In August, sales were down 65 per cent compared with a year ago, falling to 95.
Vancouver condominium sales over $1 million in July totalled 93 — up 29 per cent from a year ago — but sales in August fell 49 per cent compared with the same month last year, dropping to 40.
The Greater Toronto Area saw sales of $1-million single family homes in July and August climb 83 per cent compared with a year ago to 3,026, and 55 per cent to 959 in the city of Toronto…
