TORONTO – The Canadian dollar strengthened Tuesday but remained near 11-year lows.
The loonie traded at 71.84 cents US, up 0.23 from Monday’s close.
The Dow Jones futures were up 21.0 points at 17,199.0, the S&P 500 futures advanced 2.0 points to 2,016.9 and the Nasdaq gained 1.5 points to 4,564.5.
On the commodity markets, the February gold contract fell $3.40 to US$1,077.20 an ounce, the February crude contract was up nine cents at US$35.90 per barrel and the January contract for natural gas was dwon one cent at US$1.90.
On Monday, the Toronto Stock Exchange’s S&P/TSX index rose 10.08 points to end the day to 13,034.38.

VANCOUVER – Telus Corp.’s president and chief executive officer, Darren Entwistle, recently invested nearly $10 million in the company’s stock.
The Vancouver-based company says Entwistle directly purchased 79,000 shares on Dec. 17 at an average price of $37.76 and his family trust purchased 180,000 shares at an average price of $37.86.
Following the purchase, Entwistle personally owns 233,865 Telus shares and 392,517 restricted stock units with a total value of about $24 million
Telus shares (TSX:T) closed Monday at $38.45 on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
