Malaysia’s central bank says debt-laden fund broke foreign exchange rules, must return $1.8B
– canadianbusiness.com
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia – Malaysia’s central bank said Friday a debt-laden state investment fund violated foreign exchange rules and must repatriate $1.83 billion it used abroad.
The central bank said 1MDB obtained permission for overseas investments based on “inaccurate or without complete disclosure of material information.” The bank said therefore it revoked three approvals it previously granted for 1MDB investments and ordered the fund to repatriate the total of $1.83 billion to Malaysia.
No details were given on when the investments were made.
The central bank’s move is a new blow to the fund, which was set up by Prime Minister Najib Razak in 2009 to develop new industries, but faces accusations of graft and mismanagement after it accumulated at least 42 billion ringgit ($10 billion) in debt.
The central bank began investigating the fund earlier this year and said it has recommended criminal prosecution of the fund.

SABMiller meets with investors amid takeover bid by AB InBev
– canadianbusiness.com
LONDON – SABMiller met with investors Friday to underscore its strength as an independent company, as the world’s second-biggest brewer seeks to head off a takeover by larger rival Anheuser-Busch InBev.
SABMiller said the meetings focused on the company’s accelerating growth and a stepped up cost-cutting program that will target $1.05 billion of savings by March 2020, more than double the previous goal of $500 million by 2018.
“We are continuing to remove duplication across markets, bringing specialist expertise in areas like procurement under one roof, and standardizing common processes,” CEO Alan Clark said in a statement. “It results in our markets being freed up to concentrate on what they do best — growing revenue with local consumers and customers.”
The announcement comes two days after SABMiller rejected a 68 billion pound ($104 billion) takeover bid from AB InBev, the Belgium-based company that makes Budweiser. The offer of 42.15 pounds a share is 11 per cent more than AB InBev’s initial proposal and 28 per cent higher than SABMiller’s stock price before the bid was announced Sept…
