BEIJING, China – Asian stock markets were mostly higher Wednesday after Wall Street declined. Shares in China were mixed after leaders approved a plan to give foreign investors more access to Chinese equities through Hong Kong.
KEEPING SCORE: Tokyo’s Nikkei 225 rose 0.9 per cent to 16,748.93 points and Sydney’s S&P-ASX 200 advanced 0.4 per cent to 5,497.40. HONG KONG – China’s approval of a long-awaited initiative to link stock exchanges in Hong Kong and the mainland city of Shenzhen, allowing foreign investors wider leeway to invest in Chinese shares, got a muted reception on Wednesday.
China’s Cabinet announced late Tuesday that preparations to connect Hong Kong and Shenzhen are “basically completed.” Charles Li, CEO of Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing, the city’s stock market operator said the link would likely launched by Christmas.
Li said that while awaiting the announcement of a launch date by regulators, the stock exchange would conduct technical preparations and testing, update regulations and raise investor awareness.
The Shenzhen Composite index rose modestly on Wednesday, gaining 0.3 per cent to 2,041.82, while the Shanghai Composite fell 0.2 per cent to 3,103.02. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index added 0.2 per cent to 22,957.78.

Millionaire Next Door Principles – On Any SalaryLearn, save, invest and prosper with My Own Advisor.
Following this post I got an email from a reader that went something like this.
Your posts are interesting but we have different financial situations.  My husband and I don’t have company pensions.  We’ve pursued our passions, we love what we do, but because of that it’s more modest living.  We live frugally.  Our house will be paid off by age 50.  We have a good chunk of money in savings.  However reading about your pensions and $1 M savings goal (which you feel is attainable) is probably not realistic for us. What insights do you have for people who aren’t exactly the same path as you?
I thank this reader for their email.  It got me thinking about how I started my savings and investing journey 20+ years ago and what I envisioned for my life back then.  It’s a bit different now.  I didn’t see many of those changes coming.  My life has taken some interesting turns but I’m happy where I am.  It seems the reader is happy where they are – which is ultimately the most important thing in life…

HONG KONG – Cathay Pacific Airways says its profit tumbled in the first half of the year as economic weakness in China and other important markets cut passenger demand while it faced cutthroat competition from rivals.
Hong Kong’s biggest airline on Wednesday posted interim net profit of 353 million Hong Kong dollars ($45.5 million), down 82 per cent from the same period a year earlier.
The airline said its earnings were hurt by “economic fragility and intense competition” in the January-June period, putting sustained pressure on revenue, which fell 9.2 per cent.
The company, which also operates regional carrier Cathay Dragon, said passenger numbers rose 2.7 per cent but the money it earned from them fell 10 per cent.
Cathay said it expects business conditions to remain challenging for the rest of the year.
