TORONTO – The Canadian dollar will be looking for direction Tuesday, with no major economic data set for release.
The loonie was ahead 0.03 of a cent to 93.69 cents US.
A number of factors including rising inflation, a better American economic climate and rising oil prices have helped push the currency to the 94-cent US mark, close to its highest point so far this year.
But the Canadian dollar pulled back Monday, a sign that it may not be able to stay at this height over the long-term.
Some of the retraction came after the Bank of Canada released its summer business survey, which showed that executives at 100 of Canadian firms were confident about future economic activity but were still cautious on investment and hiring. These views were slightly more pessimistic than the spring survey.
April’s survey had showed that there were some signs of improvement for exporters, with businesses saying that they had a positive outlook based on a strengthening U.S. economy and a depreciation of the Canadian dollar…

Are you paying too much in investment fees?Q: My wife Cathy and I pay our adviser an annual flat fee of 1.25% to manage our retirement portfolio, which is worth about $1 million. But I’m not so sure I’m comfortable with this arrangement anymore. We’re buy-and-hold investors and I’m the one whose always telling our adviser what to do. What are our options for reducing fees and getting better returns? — Ned, Toronto
A: I find most investors are unaware that fees can vary greatly depending on the investment options they choose. In fact, my experience has been that many investors don’t even know how or how much they’re paying.
Just keep in mind that lower fees won’t guarantee higher returns, but they will certainly tilt the scale in your favour. For instance, if you can decrease fees or increase returns by just one percentage point annually, you can generate a one-third larger nest egg in 30 years.
Right now, you and Cathy are forking out $12,500 every year to your adviser. And because you live in Ontario, there’s an additional 13% Harmonized Sales Tax (HST), pushing your total fees to more than$14,000 a year—or 1…

TORONTO – The Toronto stock market pulled back Tuesday, with traders looking to gauge the health of the North American economy as the summer corporate earnings season gets underway.
The S&P/TSX composite index fell 92.03 points to 15,080.85, dragged down by energy and financial stocks.
The loonie was flat, up 0.02 of a cent to 93.68 cents US.
Traders are awaiting the latest results from U.S. aluminum giant Alcoa, which is set to report earnings after markets close. The company is viewed as an economic bellwether because its aluminum products are widely used in various sectors like manufacturing and the auto industry, and could point to the state of the American economy. Many Canadian companies report their earnings later this month and into August.
U.S. markets were down with the Dow Jones industrials losing 94.63 points to 16,929.58, the Nasdaq dropping 32.61 points to 4,418.92, while the S&P 500 lost 9.71 points to 1,967.94. The indexes had rallied last week to new highs following a government report that showed the world’s largest economy generated a stronger-than-expected 288,000 jobs in June…
