TORONTO – A heavy slate of economic data in the U.S. will steer North American markets this week, as traders continue to digest the latest policy announcement from the U.S. Federal Reserve.
The markets will be looking to see if the latest figures on everything from home sales to consumer spending still point to a steady, yet marked recovery of the world’s biggest economy.
“Now that the (winter) weather is out of the way, is consumption picking up? These numbers will give us further clarity on that,” said Wes Mills, chief investment officer for Scotia Private Client Group.
What will be of particular interest will be data on the durable goods orders on Wednesday. Economists will be looking to see if business investments picked up in May following a long, harsh winter, with the core capital good orders, which excludes defence and transport categories. Traders will also look for the latest figures on existing and new home prices and sales on Monday and Tuesday as an indicator of how strong the U…

HALIFAX – The Nova Scotia government was told seven months after committing $60 million to a wind tower manufacturing plant that claims of 500 jobs to be created within three years were “unrealistic,” say documents obtained by The Canadian Press.
Internal government studies obtained through freedom-of-information legislation also show provincial government revenues and the economic impact to households were only fractions of what was originally projected.
The former NDP government announced with much public fanfare in 2010 that it was taking a 49 per cent equity stake as part of a $90-million refit of the former TrentonWorks railcar plant after it was bought by Korean-owned Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering.
The plan was for DSME Trenton to eventually develop the capacity to produce 250 wind turbine towers and 200 blade sets per year.
But prior to the targeted May 2011 startup, it was already clear to the government that the facility would face difficulties when it shifted its focus from building exclusively for DeWind, a DSME-owned wind turbine company, to seeking business with other clients…

To keep me honest and focused I post my financial goals on My Own Advisor.  One thing I’ve learned over the years is I have a much better chance at realizing my goals if I keep tabs on them, and often.
In case you missed earlier posts on this subject, here’s a recap of our 2014 financial goals:

Continue putting $300 lump sum payments on our mortgage every month ($3,600).
Maximize both Tax Free Savings Accounts (TFSAs) ($11,000).
Increase Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) contributions by $200 per month ($2,400).

Here’s where we stand to date.
Continue putting $300 lump sum payments on our mortgage every month ($3,600) – on target
Since January 2014 we’ve been meeting this goal.  By making mortgage prepayments automatic, we never see this money.   If we keep up these prepayments our mortgage debt will be under $200k soon.  Being mortgage free years from now will provide some significant financial flexibility so we’re working towards that.
Maximize both Tax Free Savings Accounts (TFSAs) ($11,000) – done!
I have some stocks that pay dividends in a non-registered account so I moved some holdings into my TFSA earlier this year…

— Katie Couric (@katiecouric) June 22, 2014

EAST HAMPTON, N.Y. — Katie Couric has married a New York financier in a small ceremony at her East Hampton home.
People magazine reports the former “Today” host and John Molner took the vows on Saturday in front of 50 guests.
The 51-year-old Molner is a partner at investment firm Brown Brothers Harriman overseeing mergers and acquisitions for the firm’s corporate clients.
He proposed to the 57-year-old Couric last September after nearly two years of dating.
Couric’s first husband, Jay Monahan, died in 1998 from colon cancer.
She has two grown daughters. Molner has a son and a daughter.
Couric hosted her own talk show after leaving “Today” and a five-year run as anchor of the “CBS Evening News.” She’s now the global anchor for Yahoo News.
