HALIFAX – Bank of Canada governor Stephen Poloz says the economy may undershoot his expectations in the first few months of this year, and the slowdown may not be all weather-related.
The central banker says in a speech that slower than normal growth may be the new norm for Canada and the world, in part because of the hangover from the financial crisis, but also because baby boomers are moving into retirement and those who aren’t are saving more.
This has meant that global demand for the products Canada has to sell has been softer than would be expected four years removed from a recession, and could remain softer for some time to come, Poloz said.
The central banker didn’t formally change his overall forecast of 2.5 per cent growth in 2014 and 2015, but said the economy many not reach that level in the first quarter, which ends March 31.
An unusually icy winter is mostly being blamed for the expected slippage in production, but Poloz cautions that may not be the only cause…
