On Wednesday this past week, Michael Zehaf-Bibeau, committed a horrific crime. To use our Prime Minister’s words, it was a “brutal and violent attack”.  The armed attacker shot and left Canadian Forces member, Cpl. Nathan Cirillo, 24, to die at the National War Memorial before being shot dead himself upon his attack within Parliament’s Centre Block.  It was certainly a sad day for Ottawa and my heart goes out to the family of our slain soldier.
I can only hope this isolated, tragic incident will over time, make our city and those that serve to protect it a better place to call home.  Enjoy the Weekend Reading, have a great and safe weekend with family and friends.

TORONTO – Some of the most active companies traded Thursday on the Toronto Stock Exchange:
Toronto Stock Exchange (14,486.83, up 174.76 points):
Bombardier Inc. (TSX:BBD.B). Aerospace. Up 15 cents, or 4.13 per cent, to $3.78 on 7.6 million shares.
MBAC Fertilizer Corp. (TSX:MBC). Agriculture. Down three cents, or 21.43 per cent, to 11 cents on 7.2 million shares.
Cenovus Energy Inc. (TSX:CVE). Oil and gas. Up $1.70, or 6.47 per cent, to $27.97 on 5.1 million shares. The the oilsands producer beat analyst estimates on several key measures in the third quarter, including cash flow per share at $1.30, 15 cents ahead of estimates. Operating earnings came in at 49 cents a share, eight cents better than forecast.
Chaparral Gold Corp. (TSX:CHL). Miner. Unchanged at 60 cents on 4.3 million shares.
Air Canada (TSX:AC.B). Airline. Up 30 cents, or 3.76 per cent to $8.27 on 4 million shares.
Suncor Energy Inc. (TSX:SU). Oil and gas. Up $1.08, or 2.85 per cent, to $38.98 on 3.6 million shares…

OTTAWA – The Conservative government has introduced another mammoth omnibus budget bill that includes a grab-bag of measures, ranging from tax breaks for beekeepers to provisions banning cable companies from charging for paper bills.
Much of the 458-page bill involves the complicated implementation of tax changes and other budget measures, including revisions to the Investment Canada Act.
There are some tax breaks for families and students.
However, one section broadens the scope of the national DNA bank. Another tightens the rules around the temporary foreign workers system. Still another establishes a long-promised Arctic research station.
Conspicuous by its absence, however, is a controversial proposal to amend the Copyright Act to give a politician or party the power to use video, audio and photographs from news outlets.
A cabinet document presented by Heritage Minister Shelly Glover and obtained earlier this month by CTV News and The Canadian Press indicated the proposed copyright changes would be included an upcoming budget bill…

The stock market got a boost Thursday from a combination of strong corporate earnings and encouraging economic reports. Caterpillar and 3M were among the companies posting results that impressed investors. Hiring in the U.S. remains solid and a survey of businesses in Europe suggested that the region may avoid slipping back into recession.
On Thursday:
The Dow Jones industrial average rose 216.58 points, or 1.3 per cent, to 16,677.90.
The S&P 500 gained 23.71 points, or 1.2 per cent, to 1,950.82.
The Nasdaq composite climbed 69.95 points, or 1.6 per cent, to 4,452.79.
For the week:
The Dow is up 297.49 points, or 1.8 per cent.
The S&P 500 is up 64.06, or 3.4 per cent.
The Nasdaq has added 194.35 points, or 4.6 per cent.
For the year:
The Dow is up 101.24 points, or 0.6 per cent.
The S&P 500 index is up 102.46 points, or 5.5 per cent.
The Nasdaq is up 276.20 points, or 6.6 per cent.
