Wal-Mart Stores Inc. says its Canadian stores gained market share against rivals during its fiscal second quarter.
“We further improved our price position against competitors, which contributed to market share gains in key traffic driving categories such as food and consumables,” Wal-Mart chief financial officer Brett Biggs said in remarks prepared for analysts during a conference call to discuss its most recent results Thursday.
“Inventory was also a focus, as the team reduced overall levels, even as sales increased.”
In Canada, Walmart’s biggest competitors in the food segment are the major domestic grocery chains owned by Loblaw (TSX:L), Empire (TSX:EMP.A) and Metro (TSX:MRU) and the Canadian arm of Costco.
Walmart Canada’s comparable-store sales rose 2.5 per cent, trailing only the Mexican arm’s 7.2 per cent growth and ahead of the United States (1.8 per cent), United Kingdom (1.8 per cent) and China (0.6 per cent).

The Bangkok billionaire family that co-founded Red Bull, the world’s leading energy drink, uses offshore companies to cloak purchases of jets and luxury properties, including the posh London home where the clan’s fugitive son was last seen.
The Yoovidhya family’s efforts to hide assets show how easily major global financial players can routinely _ and, usually, legally _ move billions of dollars with little or no oversight.
The family’s confidential deals were inadvertently exposed by the jet-setting son Vorayuth “Boss” Yoovidhya, who attracted cries of impunity after repeatedly failing to show up in court for allegedly racing away in his Ferrari after slamming into a motorcycle cop in a deadly hit-and-run in Bangkok. More than 120 Instagram and Facebook postings by friends and family led The Associated Press earlier this year to the Yoovidhyas’ London vacation home, where Vorayuth refused to comment.
Thai authorities revoked his passport and issued an arrest warrant, but say they don’t know where he is…

A new report says last year’s federal budgetary shortfall was smaller than the government predicted last spring.
The parliamentary budget officer projects Ottawa’s 2016-17 shortfall was $2.1 billion smaller than forecast.
The report says the improved deficit figure was due in large part to lower-than-expected expenses booked for the Liberals’ infrastructure investment program.
The independent budget office projects the final 2016-17 shortfall at $21.4 billion, although the government’s March prediction was $23.5 billion.
A preliminary Finance Department analysis of the federal books in May estimated that, after accounting for year-end adjustments, Ottawa ran a deficit last year of about $23 billion.
Looking at this year, the budget watchdog is predicting a shortfall of $24.8 billion _ which is essentially in line with the federal 2017-18 deficit forecast of $24.4 billion.
