Canadian All-Stars
Coming off a negative year for Canadian equities, few stocks were able to pass all of our tests last year. But this year is a different story. We identify 14 All-Star Stocks, three more than last year.
Only one stock made it to the very top of the Canadian class this year by earning both an A for value and an A for growth. The coveted double-A prize went to Toronto-based Fairfax Financial. The insurance-based conglomerate is run by value investor Prem Watsa in a style similar to his hero Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway. As it happens, Berkshire is on the U.S. All-Star list this year and I own shares of both firms.
The other 13 members of the All-Star team earned at least one A and one B on our value and growth tests. The team is larger than usual this year and we hope that’s a sign that the Canadian market isn’t over extended…

We created the MoneySense All-Star Stocks guide 12 years ago to help point you to some of the best Canadian stocks on offer. This year we have once again crammed it full the information investors love, including All-Star teams from both Canada and the U.S. We weigh up the merits of each of the largest stocks in both countries and our All-Star teams contain those with the best growth and value characteristics.

That assumes an equal dollar amount was put into each All-Star Stock in the first year and rolled into the new All-Stars each year there after. By way of comparison, the S&P/TSX Composite (as represented by XIC, the iShares S&P TSX Capped Composite exchange-traded fund) climbed 4…

The aging bull market gave growth stocks a boost this year. The U.S. All-Star list ballooned to 28 stocks this time around, which is 10 more than there were last year.

We’re pleased to say that three stocks won the double-A prize this year. They are Old Republic International, Owens Corning, and Unum Group.
Old Republic International is a property and casualty insurance firm with a general and title insurance business along with the still smoldering remains of a mortgage guaranty insurance business. The firm from Chicago, stumbled badly in 2008 when its mortgage guaranty insurance business cratered. However, the company struggled through and managed to grow its dividend each year despite heavy losses along the way. These days the firm is profitable, trades at 11 times earnings and at just above book value. It pays a generous dividend yield of 4…
