CALGARY _ A rally in oil prices that started late last year and shows no signs of stopping in 2018 is expected to pave the way for bigger payouts for long-suffering Canadian energy investors as fourth-quarter reporting season gets underway in the next month.
Researchers at both AltaCorp Capital Inc. and BMO Capital Markets predicted in reports this week that Calgary-based Husky Energy Inc. will reinstate a modest cash dividend to replace the one it cancelled in late 2015 because of low commodity prices.
Husky CEO Rob Peabody said the board has yet to make a final decision on the dividend but he agreed that the financial conditions are right to allow it to be reinstated.
“My view is we should put in a dividend that is compatible with our peers but, if anything, a little to the low side … (so) it can grow over time, because that’s what investors seem to value the most,” he said during a presentation at a CIBC conference webcast from Whistler, B.C., on Wednesday.
The BMO report predicted Husky’s shareholder payouts would be set at around 30 cents per share per year…

SHANGHAI _ The Quebec Liberals are planning to cut taxes for small- and medium-sized businesses in the next provincial budget, Premier Philippe Couillard said Thursday.
He told reporters accompanying him on a trade mission to China that those businesses find themselves under increased pressure due to changes to pension rules and an impending hike to the minimum wage.
“I think if someone were to bet on a tax effort for companies, especially our small- and medium-sized firms, they would probably have a good chance of winning that bet,” Couillard said.
He wouldn’t go into details about the budget _ the fifth put forth by his government _ but said his government would be “cautious” while maintaining fiscal and financial responsibility.
Couillard said Quebec does not plan to further reduce personal taxes because the province has already made efforts to cut them.
For example, he noted that a family of four with an annual income of $90,000 has already received a $1,000 tax cut and will be getting a government cheque to offset school supply costs…

TORONTO _ The loonie continued to strengthen against a weakened greenback today, as the Toronto stock index fell moderately amid slumping oil prices.
The Canadian dollar closed at an average trading value of 81.15 cents US, up 0.12 of a U.S. cent.
The S&P/TSX composite index was down 80.20 points to 16,204.01, amid a broad-based decline in major sectors.
In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average climbed 140.67 points to 26,392.79. The S&P 500 index inched up 1.71 points to 2,839.25 and the Nasdaq composite index edged back 3.90 points to 7,411.16.
The March crude contract was down 10 cents to US$65.51 per barrel and the March natural gas contract added two cents to US$3.10 per mmBTU.
The February gold contract advanced US$6.60 cents to US$1,362.90 an ounce and the March copper contract was down one cent to US$3.22 a pound.
