CALGARY – Automakers and fuel cell developers say the hydrogen-powered age is almost here — again.
Hyundai now has a hydrogen-fuelled vehicle available in Canada, and Toyota wants to introduce theirs here too, while Canadian fuel cell developers that include Ballard Power Systems and Hydrogenics have been busy putting their product in everything from trains to buses and forklifts.
A fuel cell produces electricity through a chemical reaction, but without combustion. It converts hydrogen and oxygen into water, and in doing so, creates electricity.
“There has been a big change, particularly in the past year,” said Eric Denhoff, president of the Canadian Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Association.
But this is hardly the first time proponents have been excited about the technology.
Back in the late ’90s, the world’s carmakers made big promises that they would soon mass-produce cars that would emit nothing more than water vapour as exhaust.
Vancouver’s Ballard and Mississauga’s Hydrogenics rode that wave of excitement, with their stock prices climbing into the hundreds of dollars…

Learn, save, invest and prosper with My Own Advisor.
I recently read a profile in The Globe about a couple wondering if they could retire in another 10 years.  I’ll offer my take on their plans and a comparison to our own.
The Bio:

David, 52, and Ruth, 50.
David got severed from his job after 25 years a couple of years ago. He’s back working.
Ruth has a government job, full defined benefit pension plan.

The Math:

Assets > $2 million:

bank accounts $22,000; stocks (mainly stock in his former employer) $58,000; combined TFSAs $72,000; combined RRSPs $321,000; estimated value of his pension $750,000; estimated value of her pension $250,000
home $470,000; cabin $125,000.

Liabilities = $0.

The Dream:

David and Ruth are wondering whether they can quit work – David at age 62 and Ruth at 60 – and still maintain their lifestyle.

Can they retire in 10 years?
I would hope so…
With no debt, I think David and Ruth are in outstanding financial shape.  This is because they have a generous cash bank account, decent RRSP assets but most importantly, $1 million worth of vested pensions in their 50s…

MONTREAL – Bernard Lamarre, a pioneer in Quebec’s engineering industry and a former head of Lavalin, died on Wednesday at the age of 84.
Lamarre contributed to various major construction projects in Montreal, including the Olympic Stadium, Complexe Desjardins and the Louis-Hyppolite Lafontaine tunnel.
He was also involved in the massive James Bay hydroelectric development in the 1970s. Lavalin’s contract truly launched the company, while the overall project highlighted Quebec expertise in dam-building and the transport of electricity.
In 1972, Lamarre became president of the Lalonde, Lamarre, Valois et Associes engineering firm, which then changed its name to Lavalin.
Under his helm, the company expanded its activities into the rest of Canada as well as onto the international stage.
That allowed the firm to obtain contracts in more than 50 countries, including Algeria and South Africa. At the beginning of the 1980s, Lavalin accelerated its diversification into various sectors, including petrochemicals, public transit and real estate…
