BEIJING, China – In a bright spot for China’s cooling economy, online shoppers spent billions of dollars Friday on “Singles Day,” a quirky holiday that has grown into the world’s busiest day for e-commerce.
The country’s biggest e-commerce brand, Alibaba Group, said sales by the thousands of retailers on its platforms passed 62.6 billion yuan ($9 billion) in the first 10 hours of the day. That is triple the $3 billion research firm comScore says Americans spent in total last year on Cyber Monday, the country’s biggest online shopping day.
Rivals including JD.com, VIP.com and Suning offered bargains on clothing, smartphones, travel packages and other goods to attract shoppers.
JD.com said it planned to test delivery by drone to customers in four rural areas in what the company it believed to be the first commercial use of such service.
The spending gives a boost to the ruling Communist Party’s efforts to nurture consumer-based economic growth and reduce reliance on trade and investment…

TORONTO – U.S.-based Vantiv, Inc. is buying an American subsidiary of Toronto-based payment processor Moneris Solutions Corp. for US$425 million.
Upon completion of the deal, Vantiv will begin servicing merchants and other business relationships of Schaumburg, Ill.-based subsidiary Moneris Solutions, Inc.
The servicing arrangement will include BMO Harris Bank which operates about 600 branches in the U.S.
Vantiv serves more than 800,000 merchant locations and 1,400 financial institutions.
Moneris Solutions, Inc. processed about US$12 billion in transaction volume in 2015.
The deal is expected to close in the fourth quarter of this year, pending certain adjustments.

BEIJING, China – Donald Trump is a mixed blessing for Chinese leaders.
Trump’s threats to tear up trade deals and hike tariffs on Chinese goods look ominous. If carried out, they could chill thriving commercial ties at a time when Beijing is struggling to shore up economic growth.
At the same time, Trump’s suggestion he might reduce Washington’s global strategic presence to focus on domestic issues would be a gift to Chinese leaders. They could expand their political and military profile in East Asia with less risk of conflict.

The incoming Trump administration faces the task of maintaining influence in the face of rising Chinese strategic ambitions while accommodating Asian countries that are being drawn into Beijing’s economic orbit.
