India and Japan sign accords for bullet train, military sales; close in on nuclear co-operation
– canadianbusiness.com
NEW DELHI – Japan and India signed agreements Saturday that could pave the way for Tokyo to supply New Delhi with military aircraft and high-speed trains, as Prime Minister Shinzo Abe promised to fully support India’s efforts to become an economic powerhouse.
The two countries also laid the groundwork for Japan to help India further develop its nuclear power, with a final deal to be signed after technical details are finalized.
Abe described the agreements, signed during his weekend visit to New Delhi, as a new era of co-operation between the two countries.
“In September 2014 in Tokyo, Prime Minister Abe spoke of $35 billion of Japanese finance and investments for India over five years,” Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said at a news conference with Abe. “It was ambitious. But together, we are quickly turning it into reality.”
Abe said Japan’s co-operation with India in the nuclear field would be limited to peaceful objectives.

Romanian court: Put Prince Paul under house arrest for an alleged massive real estate fraud
– canadianbusiness.com
BUCHAREST, Romania – A Romanian court has ruled that Romania’s Prince Paul be placed under home arrest pending a probe into a massive real estate fraud.
Paul was charged Saturday with money laundering and influence-buying in a case involving the restitution of real estate that prosecutors say cost the state 136 million euros ($150 million). The 67-year-old prince again denied any wrongdoing Saturday.
Prosecutors say starting in 2006, a politically-connected businessman and four others used their influence to get the state to restitute land to Paul, which he in turn gave them a share of the value of that land.
The land had been confiscated from the royal family by Romania’s communist regime. Paul is estranged from his uncle, King Michael, who was forced to abdicate by the communists in 1947

Tax cuts, corporate incentives exacerbate Oklahoma’s state budget crisis following oil bust
– canadianbusiness.com
OKLAHOMA CITY – Even as Oklahoma’s economy was roaring thanks to an oil boom, state services like education felt the pinch because costly tax cuts and incentives ate up much of the surplus revenue.
When the inevitable bust followed, beginning last year, oil prices slid to the $40-per-barrel range, driving up unemployment and prompting energy sector layoffs.
Dwindling revenue collections coupled with the tax cuts and corporate breaks have punched a huge hole in the state’s budget.
The latest cut to the top income tax rate is scheduled to take effect in January, just as the state is grappling with the growing budget hole.
Gov. Mary Fallin has defended the income tax cut as a way to spur the state’s economy, but critics argue the state’s financial crisis is self-inflicted.
