Inspired by a few reader questions a few weeks ago and reflecting upon some older blogposts, I wondered what financial advice would I tell my younger self?  Here are some things that have crossed my mind…
Dear Mark,

There is no point saving for your financial future if you don’t take care of your health.  Your health will be your most important asset.
Investing is for the long-term.  Trading is for the short-term.  You’re going to have minimal success at timing the market so forget trading.  Make sure you buy and hold indexed products and established companies that pay dividends instead.
Avoid tinkering with your portfolio.  See reason above.
The biggest barriers to your financial freedom will be, other than your good health:  your investing behaviour, taxes and inflation.
You’re going to make some major investing mistakes but hopefully you’ll make fewer of them over time.
You’ll learn to appreciate indexing more and more as you get older.
You will thoroughly enjoy plotting your own financial course…

HONG KONG – China’s state-owned film distributor is making its first investment in Hollywood movies by taking a stake in two projects by production company Legendary Entertainment.
The two companies said on Tuesday that China Film would make an “eight-figure equity investment” in two upcoming films, “Seventh Son” and “Warcraft.”
The exact amount was not specified.
“Seventh Son” is a fantasy adventure starring Jeff Bridges and Julianne Moore. “Warcraft” is based on a video game.
If approved for release in China, China Film would distribute the movies under current rules and regulations for foreign films, which are tightly controlled.
The projects are the first since Legendary and China Film teamed up last year.
Hollywood studies are keen to move into China, now the world’s second biggest movie market.

FRANKFURT – Food company Nestle SA says sales rose 4.2 per cent in the first quarter compared with a year ago despite deflationary pressures in Europe.
The Switzerland-based maker of Lean Cuisine, Nespresso and Haagen-Dazs said Tuesday that sales of 20.8 billion Swiss francs ($23.7 billion) were held back by a strong franc and by a flat retail environment that is keeping prices down in Europe. Sales there fell 0.8 per cent.
Candy sales were reduced by a later Easter, which pushed sales of sweets into the second quarter.
CEO Paul Bulcke said the first quarter increase was consistent with the company’s forecasts and was “driven by volume rather than by price.” He reaffirmed the company’s sales target of 5 per cent growth for this year, saying that sales performance would be “weighted to the second half.”
Chief Financial Officer Wan Ling Martello said on a conference call with analysts that “we do expect some pricing pickup by the end of the year” in Europe…
