LOS ANGELES, Calif. – A San Francisco man was sentenced Thursday to three months in federal prison for using insider information five years ago to profit off The Walt Disney Co.’s $4 billion purchase of Marvel Entertainment.
Toby G. Scammell was also ordered to pay more than $120,000 to brokers who sold him stock options, according to Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephen Cazares. Scammell also owes the Securities and Exchange Commission $801,000 in penalties and interest in a separate civil settlement.
Scammell, 29, was tipped off to the acquisition by a girlfriend who worked as a Disney corporate strategy employee. He made $192,000 from the deal.
The former girlfriend, who wasn’t charged in the scheme, told Scammell only that Disney planned to acquire a company “people would recognize right away.” Scammell knew from his consulting work that Disney had wanted to acquire the comic book publisher famous for “Spider-Man” and “X-Men.”
He bought call options in Marvel stock for around $5,500 and sold them after the Aug…

HONG KONG – World stocks sank Friday as jitters over the crises in Iraq and Ukraine escalated, but Chinese stocks rose after surprisingly strong growth in exports.
KEEPING SCORE: Futures augured sharp falls on Wall Street. Dow futures were down 0.6 per cent at 16,216 and S&P 500 futures lost 0.7 per cent to 1,891.20. In early European trading, Germany’s DAX shed 1.5 per cent to 8,905.60 and France’s CAC 40 dropped 0.9 per cent to 4,113.23. London’s FTSE 100 retreated 1 per cent to 6,531.80.
ASIA’S DAY: Japan’s Nikkei 225 led Asian declines, sliding 3 per cent to 14,778.37 as the yen strengthened. South Korea’s Kospi lost 1.1 per cent to 2,031.10 and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng shed 0.2 per cent to 24,329.08. In mainland China, the Shanghai Composite Index climbed 0.3 per cent to 2,194.42. Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 fell 1.3 per cent to 5,435.30. Markets in India and Southeast Asia fell.
