TORONTO _ Canada’s real estate market will hit a slow patch in 2018 as tighter mortgage stress tests apply pressure and the impact could be exacerbated if an expected interest rate hike drives buyers to put off their home purchases, economists said Monday.
The Bank of Canada will make its first interest rate announcement of the year on Wednesday. Many observers predict will boost the country’s benchmark rate by 25 points to 1.25 per cent after the economy’s strong performance last year and a particularly strong jobs report from November. If the economy keeps pace, they believe that rate may be bumped up a few more times over 2018.
The suspected hikes could heap stress onto buyers already combating stricter regulations that were introduced by the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions on Jan. 1 for uninsured mortgages, and elevated five-year, fixed mortgage rates that were pushed up by the CIBC, RBC and TD banks last week.

CALGARY _ A new survey suggests a third of Canadians can’t pay their monthly bills, including debt repayments, against a backdrop of rising interest rates.
The quarterly MNP consumer debt index survey finds the number of Canadians who can’t cover their fixed monthly expenses is up eight points since September.
It also finds Canadians who are making ends meet have less disposable income, with an average $631 left after paying bills and contributing to debt repayment. That’s 15 per cent less money left over than in the previous quarter.
The survey says Canadians worried more about their debt as the Bank of Canada raised its benchmark interest rate twice last year and is expected to continue the momentum in 2018.
Four-in-10 respondents say they fear financial trouble if interest rates rise much further and one-in-three agree they’re concerned rising rates could move them toward bankruptcy.
More than 70 per cent of respondents say they’ll be more careful with how they spend money as rates move up, and nearly half say they believe they’ll have to take on more debt over the next year to cover expenses…

TORONTO _ Canada’s main stock index was up amid gains in the health-care sector.
The S&P/TSX composite index closed up 63.63 points to 16,371.81.
The increase came as shares of licensed marijuana producer Aphria Inc. gained more than 15 per cent as it climbed $2.97 to $20.99 on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
Aphria (TSX:APH) announced before markets opened an agreement to acquire Broken Coast Cannabis Inc. in a deal it valued at $230 million in stock and cash.
The Canadian dollar was trading at 80.52 cents US, up from an average price of 79.97 cents US on Friday.
U.S. markets were closed on Monday for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
