VANCOUVER – Shares of Lululemon Athletica inc. (Nasdaq:LULU) are under pressure following a warning to investors from the fashion retailer, which says its sales have been below target since December.
The Vancouver-based company says it now expects its fourth-quarter revenue and profit will be significantly lower than its previous estimate.
Its shares fell about nine per cent in pre-market trading after the warning.
Lululemon’s stock closed Friday at US$59.60 on the Nasdaq market and were down about $5.32 shortly after the warning.
Analysts had been expecting Lululemon’s actual results to be slightly above the company’s previous guidance.
Lululemon’s new revenue range is between US$513 million and US$518 million, about $22 million lower than the previous guidance.
The company’s new estimate for diluted earnings per share is between 71 and 73 cents per share, a reduction of seven cents.
Analysts had estimated 79 cents per share of adjusted earnings, according to Thomson Reuters…

FRANKFURT – Luxury carmaker BMW AG has posted record sales for 2013, keeping its No. 1 spot in the market for high-priced cars against its German competitors Audi and Mercedes.
The Munich-based company said Monday it sold 1.66 million vehicles under the BMW brand, 7.5 per cent more than last year.
The figure was boosted by strong sales of the brand’s mainstay 3-series sedan and X1 small SUV as well as by rising demand in China and the United States. Sales of the 3-series rose 23 per cent.
Volkswagen AG’s Audi division last week reported sales of 1.57 million last year and Daimler AG’s Mercedes-Benz brand came in at 1.46 million. The three carmakers are pillars of Germany’s export-focused economy and have reaped fat earnings selling luxury cars and SUVs — which earn higher profits per vehicle than mass-market vehicles — in the United States and in emerging markets, led by China.
The competition among the three heats up Monday at the start of the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, where Mercedes is introducing a new version of its C-Class that will compete with the BMW 3-series…

How a Falling Loonie Affects US Equity ETFs

– CanadianCouchPotato.com

How a Falling Loonie Affects US Equity ETFsOver the last year the loonie has declined significantly relative to the US dollar: the currencies were at par early last February, but the Canadian dollar closed under $0.92 US on January 10. That has been a benefit for Canadians who hold US equities: not only did the stocks deliver huge returns in their local currency in 2013, but we got a further boost thanks to the appreciation of the US dollar.
Unfortunately, the drop in our dollar has encouraged some ETF investors to attempt to exploit a buying opportunity. Trying to make currency plays is foolish at the best of times, but it’s especially unwise if you don’t fully understand how currency exposure works.
Meet Gerry, who uses the Vanguard S&P 500 (VOO) to get exposure to US stocks. This ETF is listed on the New York Stock Exchange and trades in US dollars. With the greenback riding high, Gerry plans to sell VOO and use the proceeds to buy an equivalent fund listed on the TSX: the Vanguard S&P 500 (VFV). Gerry tells his friends he’s selling US dollars high and buying Canadian dollars low while keeping his equity exposure the same…
