SINGAPORE – Singaporean and Swiss regulators announced fines and other penalties Tuesday for Falcon Private Bank, saying it breached money laundering regulations in its dealings with the indebted Malaysian state fund 1MDB.
The Monetary Authority of Singapore ordered the private bank to close down in the city-state and pay a fine of 4.3 million Singapore dollars ($3.12 million) for violations that included not filing suspicious transaction reports and failing to alert authorities about irregular activity in customers’ accounts.
The Singapore branch manager of Falcon Private Bank, Jens Sturzenegger, was arrested on Oct 6, it said in a statement.
The regulator cited “serious failures in anti-money laundering controls and improper conduct by senior management” in Switzerland and Singapore.
The Swiss financial watchdog likewise said it found Falcon Private Bank had failed to carry out adequate background checks into transactions and business relationships. It fined Falcon 2…

WASHINGTON – Behind closed doors, Hillary Clinton adopted a rather more accommodating tone with Wall Street than she has on the campaign trail.
In private paid speeches to financial firms and interest groups before she declared her candidacy, the Democratic presidential nominee comes off as a knowing insider, willing to cut backroom deals, embrace open trade and grant Wall Street a central role in crafting financial regulations, according to excerpts obtained last week through hacked campaign emails provided to WikiLeaks.

TORONTO – A last-minute tentative agreement has averted a threatened strike by 9,750 workers at Fiat-Chrysler’s operations in Ontario.
Unifor president Jerry Dias announced the four-year deal just minutes before a strike deadline of 11:59 p.m. Monday night.
He said the deal, which followed what he called “one very difficult set of negotiations,” mirrors the one reached with General Motors on Sept. 20.
That deal, since ratified by GM workers, includes a two per cent wage increase this year and another two per cent increase in September, 2019. There is also a $6,000 signing bonus plus lump sum bonuses of $2,000 in each of the next three years to most employees.
It also included improvements to benefits, hiring practices and a GM commitment to invest $554 million in its Canadian operations.
Dias said the agreement with Fiat-Chrysler includes a $325 million investment at an assembly plant in Brampton, Ont., and a pledge to upgrade an old paint shop at the facility.
“We were deeply concerned with the fact that the paint shop in our Brampton assembly plant that builds the 300s, the Chargers and the Challengers is over 30 years old,” said Dias…
