Toronto real estate soars to new heights
– moneysense.ca
TORONTO – The Toronto area’s real estate market set a record last month, with nearly 13,000 homes sold, despite sky-high prices and new federal mortgage rules targeted at Canada’s most expensive housing markets.
The Toronto Real Estate Board said Friday the number of sales last month was up 10.6 per cent from May 2015 and prices were up about 15 per cent. That came one day after its counterpart in Vancouver also reported record-breaking sales for the month.
Housing bubble? Depends if you read the numbers or the market »
For a detached house in the city of Toronto, the average price last month was $1.28 million, while the average price for all homes was $782,051, TREB said.
TREB president Mark McLean said a shortage of homes for sale helped drive the rise in prices.
Finance Minister Bill Morneau has increased the minimum down payment for homes over $500,000, a measure aimed specifically at Toronto and Vancouver.

US hiring grinds to a near-halt; many stop looking for work
WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. hiring slowed to a near-standstill in May, sowing doubts about the economy’s health and complicating the Federal Reserve’s efforts to raise interest rates.
While unemployment slid from 5 per cent to 4.7 per cent, the lowest since November 2007, the rate fell for a troubling reason: Nearly a half-million jobless Americans stopped looking for work and so were no longer counted as unemployed.
Employers added just 38,000 jobs in May, the fewest in over five years.

US stocks, dollar slide after weak jobs report
Banks and other financial companies led a modest decline in U.S. stocks Friday after a report indicating that hiring slowed sharply in May put investors in a selling mood.
The market slide snapped a two-day winning streak and sent bond prices surging as investors sought safety in U.S. government-backed debt. The dollar also fell sharply against several major currencies.
The downbeat jobs data appeared to convince traders that the Federal Reserve will keep interest rates low longer than previously expected…

More charges against ex-pharmaceutical executive Shkreli
– canadianbusiness.com
NEW YORK, N.Y. – Federal prosecutors in New York have filed additional criminal charges against a pharmaceutical executive who separately was heavily criticized for raising the price of a lifesaving malaria medication.
A new indictment filed Friday in Brooklyn says Martin Shkreli (SHKREL’-ee) and his former attorney Evan Greebel schemed to defraud potential investors of his former drug company Retrophin Inc., based in San Diego. They say the two allocated company stock to seven employees to conceal Shkreli’s ownership of it.
Shkreli previously pleaded not guilty to charges he lost investors’ money through bad trades and looted the pharmaceutical company to pay them back.
Shkreli already was reviled because another drug company he owned raised the price of Daraprim by 5,000 per cent.
Shkreli’s attorney says the allegations won’t change the “flawed theory” of the case. Greebel’s lawyer has no comment.

Toronto Real Estate Board must lift restrictions on home sales data: tribunal
– canadianbusiness.com
TORONTO – Canada’s largest real estate board must give its realtor members access to more home sales data, which they could share with the public online, the Competition Tribunal said Friday.
The tribunal said the Toronto Real Estate Board must include in its home sales data feed information it currently does not disclose, including sales figures, pending sales and broker commissions. Member realtors can also request access to archived data.
In its decision, the tribunal said realtor members would be allowed to post that information on their websites, as long as users are required to register to access it. Sellers would be permitted to opt out of having their addresses and listings posted online.
TREB has been given 60 days to make the changes. It did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The matter is ongoing, however. The Competition Bureau said Friday the competition commissioner has been served with a notice of appeal by TREB, alleging that the tribunal erred when it ruled in favour of the bureau earlier this year…
