Toronto stock market set to advance amid Fed tapering speculation
– canadianbusiness.com
TORONTO – The Toronto stock market headed for a slightly higher open Thursday amid a fresh round of speculation that the Federal Reserve may start cutting back on its monetary stimulus early in the new year.
The Canadian dollar was down 0.24 of a cent to 95.48 cents US.
The dollar backed off after Bank of Canada governor Stephen Poloz said he disagreed with an assessment Tuesday by the OECD that the central bank would have to start raising interests rates by the end of next year.
But Poloz told the Senate standing committee on banking, trade and commerce that the central bank’s thinking on the issue is based on its own view of slack in the Canadian economy and the fact that inflation, at 1.1 per cent, is currently well below where he would like it to be.

Cypriot university to accept Bitcoin for tuition payments to help overseas students
– canadianbusiness.com
NICOSIA, Cyprus – Cyprus’ biggest private university said Thursday it will start accepting the digital currency Bitcoin as an alternative way to pay tuition fees.
The country had been a hub for international banking before suffering a collapse in its financial system this year, leading the government to impose controls on the flow of capital as it accepted an international bailout.
But the University of Nicosia said the move to accept Bitcoin was unrelated to the controls. Rather, it was meant to help foreign students in countries where traditional banking transactions are either difficult or costly to pay for programs such as online degrees.
The university’s chief financial officer, Christos Vlachos, said the institution, which has about 8,500 students enrolled, is the first in the world to take Bitcoin payments.
