TORONTO – The Toronto stock market headed for a positive open ahead of the long Labour Day weekend as traders awaited a basket of key economic data including the latest economic growth figures for Canada and U.S. consumer spending and confidence numbers.
The Canadian dollar gained 0.01 of a cent to 92.2 cents US.
U.S. futures also indicated a higher start to the session as the Dow Jones industrial futures gained 34 points to 17,111, the Nasdaq futures were ahead nine points to 4,078 and the S&P 500 futures rose five points to 2,001.7.
North American markets appeared set for small gains for this past week with advances led by consumer staples, industrials and telecoms. But the market was held back by the financial sector, down 1.15 per cent this week despite a steady parade of earnings news from the big Canadian banks that largely beat expectations.
But stock prices for the big banks were at or near record or 52-week highs as the results started to come out a week ago and the financial sector is still up 11 per cent year to date…
