TORONTO – The Toronto stock market was slightly higher amid data showing a deepening contraction of the Chinese manufacturing sector and earnings from Canadian corporate heavyweights including grocer Loblaw (TSX:L) and coffee chain Tim Hortons (TSX:THI).
The S&P/TSX composite index was ahead 16.6 points to 14,136.33 as traders also focused on TransCanada (TSX:TRP) after the pipeline company’s Keystone XL project suffered a major setback in a Nebraska court.
A judge has overturned a state law that could have forced landowners to allow the pipeline through their property. The state will appeal the decision.
The Canadian dollar lost 0.07 of a cent to 90.17 cents US.
U.S. indexes also rose with the Dow Jones industrials ahead 32.53 points to 16,073.09, the Nasdaq composite index rose 11.01 points to 4,248.96 while the S&P 500 index climbed four points to 1,832.75.
Commodity prices fell as HSBC’s preliminary version of its monthly China purchasing managers’ index fell to a seven-month low of 48…

CALGARY – TransAlta Corp. (TSX:TA) cut its quarterly dividend Thursday as it reported a loss in the fourth quarter and the sale of its 50 per cent stake in CE Generation, Blackrock development and Wailuku to its partner MidAmerican Renewables for US$193.5 million.
The power producer said it would now pay a quarterly dividend of 28 cents per share, down from its earlier payment to shareholders of 29 cents per share.
TransAlta president and chief executive Dawn Farrell said the company’s growth strategy is unchanged but its ability to executive the plan will be enhanced by the asset sale and dividend reduction.
“An attractive, sustainable dividend continues to be an important part of our approach to delivering value to shareholders. In addition, a strong investment grade balance sheet is critical for enhancing our ability to compete for growth opportunities,” Farrell said.
TransAlta reported a fourth-quarter loss Thursday of C$66 million or 25 cents per share compared with a profit of $39 million or 15 cents per share in the last quarter of 2012…

CALGARY – TransCanada Corp. (TSX:TRP) — the company trying to build the Keystone XL pipeline between Alberta and Texas — reported a more profitable fourth quarter but missed analyst estimates.
Its comparable earnings increased to $410 million or 58 cents per share, up from $318 million or 45 cents per share a year earlier.
Net income attributable to common shares was $420 million or 59 cents per share, up from $306 million or 43 cents per share
The profit was about a penny per share below estimates by both measures.
Analysts had estimated the Calgary-based pipeline and power generation company’s would have 59 cents per share of adjusted earnings and 60 cents per share of net income.
TransCanada says its quarterly dividend will be going up for the 14th year in a row, rising by four per cent to 48 cents per share.
