NEW YORK, N.Y. – U.S. stocks are closing at a record as energy prices rebound and as Republicans gained control of the Senate.
The Dow Jones and Standard & Poor’s 500 indexes closed at all-time highs Wednesday.
Devon Energy jumped 10 per cent and Chesapeake Energy rose 7 per cent. Both reported earnings that were better than Wall Street analysts were expecting.
The S&P 500 index rose 11 points, or 0.6 per cent, to 2,023.
The Dow rose 100 points, or 0.6 per cent, to 17,484. The Nasdaq composite fell three points, or 0.1 per cent, to 4,620.
U.S. crude oil rose $1.49 to $78.68 a barrel in New York. It was the first gain for the price of oil in five days.
Bond prices fell. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note rose to 2.36 per cent.

Tesla delivers record 7,785 sedans in 3Qm, but loss widens on engineering costs

DETROIT – Electric car maker Tesla Motors set a quarterly record for deliveries of its Model S sedan, but its losses mounted due to increased engineering costs.
Tesla delivered 7,785 cars during the July-September period. That was slightly below its guidance of 7,800 but up 41.5 per cent from the same quarter a year ago.
Its net loss widened to $74.7 million for the quarter, or 60 cents per share, about double its loss from a year ago.
Accounting for leasing, stock-based compensation and other factors, Palo Alto, California-based Tesla Motors Inc. beat analysts’ expectations with earnings of 2 cents per share. Analysts polled by FactSet expected a loss of a penny.
On that basis, Tesla also beat analysts’ revenue forecast, with revenue of $932 million. Analysts expected $892.1 million.
Shares rose 5.3 per cent to $243.30 in aftermarket trading Wednesday.
