TSX to open lower amid major oilpatch buy; traders look to U.S. housing data
– canadianbusiness.com
TORONTO – The Toronto stock market looked set to open lower amid earnings news and acquisition activity in the Western Canadian oilpatch.
The Canadian dollar edged up 0.05 of a cent to 91.37 cents US.
New York futures were also lower as traders looked to see how severe winter weather impacted housing starts during January.
Economists looked for U.S. housing starts data to fall by 10 per cent to an annualized rate of 899,000.
The Dow Jones industrial futures fell 53 points to 16,054, the Nasdaq futures were down 7.7 points to 3,667.3 while the S&P 500 futures declined 6.75 points to 1,830.75.
The TSX and New York markets put in a lacklustre performance Tuesday amid manufacturing and real estate data that showed severe winter weather is having an impact on U.S. economic performance.
Also, traders will look to the release of the minutes from the latest Federal Reserve meeting mid-afternoon, where the central bank moved to further taper its bond purchases to $64 billion a month. Traders hoped to see some guidance from the Fed on future tapering…

Sherritt reports bigger Q4 loss, misses estimates amid asset impairments
– canadianbusiness.com
TORONTO – Sherritt International Corp. (TSX:S) missed analyst estimates in the fourth quarter, reporting a $673.8 million net loss as it recorded a loss on the sale of its coal business and weaker operating results.
Sherritt reported a $38.1 million adjusted net loss in the fourth quarter, equal to 13 cents per share, as a result of a $466.8 million impairment charge related to the coal business and other items.
Analysts had expected Sherritt’s adjusted earnings would break even.
The company also told shareholders Wednesday that its quarterly dividend will be cut 76 per cent to one cent per common share, starting with the April 14 payment, down from 4.3 cents.
It said reduced payout to shareholders was prudent given persistently low commodity prices and its near-term funding requirements, particularly for the Ambatovy nickel project in Madagascar.
At the modified payout level, the annual cost of the dividend will be reduced by approximately $39 million in 2014, Sherritt said…
