TORONTO _ Canada’s main stock index is moderately lower this morning, weighed down by resource stocks.
The Toronto Stock Exchange’s S&P/TSX composite index declined 41.52 points to 14,983.01, after 90 minutes of trading.
In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average climbed 46.53 points to 21,831.31. The S&P 500 index inched up 0.10 of a point to 2,465.20 and the Nasdaq composite index gave back 13.35 points to 6,384.52.
The Canadian dollar was trading at 82.31 cents US, down from Thursday’s average price of 82.32 cents US.
In commodities news, the October crude contract was down 96 cents to US$48.13 per barrel and the October natural gas contract dropped six cents to US$2.92 per mmBTU.
The December gold contract declined $1.40 at US$1,348.90 an ounce and the December copper contract was down nine cents at US$3.09 a pound.

ATHENS, Greece _ French President Emmanuel Macron urged European firms to step up their investments in Greece to help reduce the cash-strapped country’s growing reliance on non-European countries, notably China.
Addressing a round-table of Greek and French business leaders Friday, Macron said Greece was “forced” to choose non-European investors “because the Europeans were not there.”
French enterprises, he said with certainty, would ramp up their investments in Greece, a country that’s spent much of the past decade hurtling from one crisis to the next and seen its economy shrink by a quarter and unemployment and poverty levels swell alarmingly.
“We want Korean, Chinese and American investments, these are very important,” he said. “But if there are no European investors, then we are forced to select non-European investors.”
A failure to respond, he said, would show that Europeans have “no faith in Europe.”

OTTAWA _ The labour market expanded for a ninth-consecutive month to register its longest job-creating streak since before the financial crisis nine years ago, Statistics Canada said Friday.
The increase of 22,200 jobs last month also helped nudge the unemployment rate to a nine-year low of 6.2 per cent, down from 6.3 per cent in July.
Looking beyond the more-volatile monthly numbers, the labour market grew 2.1 per cent in August compared to a year earlier. From the addition of 374,300 net new jobs, 57 per cent of them were full time.
The jobs data provided yet another sign of Canada’s healthy economic trajectory.
The country’s surprisingly solid start to 2017 has already motivated the Bank of Canada to hike its interest rate twice this year, including an increase earlier in the week.
Some economists said Friday’s numbers validated the central bank’s move and helped support predictions of another rate increase before the end of the year _ or perhaps as soon as next month…
