Ontario’s provincially owned Hydro One sees profit slip 7% in 2014
– canadianbusiness.com
TORONTO – Hydro One Inc., Ontario’s provincially owned electricity transmission and distribution company, has reported a seven per cent drop in profits in 2014 as higher power purchase costs and increased operating expenses more than offset an increase in revenue.
Hydro One said full-year net income was $749 million versus $803 million in 2013, resulting in a dividend payment of $287 million to its sole shareholder, the Province of Ontario.
The $54-million decrease in net income was primarily due to an increase in the company’s distribution operation and maintenance and administration costs as a result of a number of factors.
Those factors included costs of customer service recovery initiatives and an increase in bad debt expense resulting from the temporary suspension of collection activities over several months.
“Consistent with our customer service recovery, certain collection tools are being reinstated,” the company said in its earnings release.
It also faced higher electricity consumption due to a substantially colder than normal winter and higher electricity prices…
