Alberta Environment Minister says climate policy needed for investment
– canadianbusiness.com
CALGARY – Alberta’s environment minister says debate around climate change has become too polarized, and that uncertainty on action will discourage investment.
Speaking to a full house at the Pembina Climate Summit in Calgary Tuesday, Shannon Phillips said the debate in the oil and gas industry has already shifted to how best to tackle climate change — but that the political right in Alberta continues to preach inaction.
“As we move back into the legislature, you will all hear again and again that this is not the right time for action. For some there will never be a right time,” said Phillips.
She said the NDP is pushing ahead with its ambitious environmental agenda, despite strong push back from opposition members who say the plan is too costly for Albertans.
“We are doing all of this in a highly polarized political environment, where the political right in this province can barely conceal their contempt for Premier Notley and her government,” said Phillips…

Matt Dunham/APThe Bank of Canada’s governor says today’s era of stubbornly low interest rates means it’s time to revisit retirement plans, temper business investment expectations and encourage policy-makers to pounce on smaller morsels of economic opportunity.
In prepared remarks of a speech he was to deliver Tuesday in Quebec City, Stephen Poloz laid out recommendations on how to adapt to low interest rates that he expects will linger for a long time.
“The most important force pushing the neutral rate down has been a steady decline in the potential growth in the economy,” Poloz’s speech said.
“I have heard from many Canadians who are rightly worried about their ability to live off their savings and who are seeking a return to higher interest rates.”
The bank’s benchmark interest rate, however, has remained at a low level of 0.5 per cent for more than a year and it’s not expected to start climbing any time soon.
To ensure an adequate retirement, Poloz suggested Canadians consider saving more, working longer than planned and changing their investment mix to adjust to the persistently low interest rates…
