Union for GM workers says a lot of issues unresolved as strike deadline nears
– canadianbusiness.com
TORONTO – The union that represents auto workers at General Motors says a lot of issues remain unresolved in negotiations with the company, but progress is being made.
In a memo updating its talks with GM, Unifor says it’s still trying to secure further product investment before a strike deadline set for Monday at 11:59 p.m. ET.
Unifor, which represents about 23,000 auto workers in Canada, selected GM as its target company in the opening round of contract discussions with the so-called Detroit Three automakers.
The union said any deal reached with GM would serve as a template for negotiations with the other two automakers, Ford and Fiat Chrysler.
Going into the discussions, union president Jerry Dias said he was aware negotiations with GM would be tough — but that was precisely why the company was chosen.
A focal point of the negotiations was securing more work at GM’s plant in Oshawa, Ont., where the company employs 2,500 unionized workers.

Alberta gas producer joins forces with B.C. LNG export project developer
– canadianbusiness.com
CALGARY – A northwestern Alberta natural gas producer dismayed by Canada’s “grossly oversupplied” gas market is investing in a company that has vowed to build a liquefied natural gas export terminal on Vancouver Island.
Calgary-based Seven Generations Energy (TSX:VII) says it will take a minority stake in Vancouver-based Steelhead LNG, adding the two have agreed to explore pipeline development and open new overseas markets for natural gas.
Analysts estimated the investment at less than $55 million, but the exact size and cost of the equity position were not disclosed. Seven Generations said the cost was less than five per cent of its 2016 capital budget.
Steelhead has proposed two LNG export projects, Malahat LNG and Sarita LNG, that would use floating production and storage units moored to marine jetties. It has five 25-year National Energy Board licences to export up to a combined total of 30 million tonnes of LNG per year and is partnered with the Malahat First Nation…
