THE HAGUE, Netherlands – German Chancellor Angela Merkel has been honoured for her leadership in a series of crises that have hit Europe in recent years, from the financial meltdown to the massive migration influx.
Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte lauded Merkel as she was presented with the International Four Freedoms Award at a ceremony Thursday in the southern Dutch city of Middelburg.
Four Freedoms medals are presented in alternate years by the Dutch-based Roosevelt Foundation and the Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt Institute in New York.
The Dutch foundation said in Europe’s migration crisis, “Merkel is committed to Europe’s humanitarian duty to protect those fleeing war and conflict in the Middle East, Africa and Asia and to tackle the causes of the crisis by working for peace in Syria and the region.”

BEIJING, China – Regulators told Chinese banks on Thursday to finance steel exports to help reduce a supply glut in a move that could worsen trade tensions with Europe and the United States.
Beijing faces pressure from the United States and Europe to stop what they complain is a strategy of trying to clear away a backlog of steel by exporting at improperly low prices. Washington imposed anti-dumping duties last month on Chinese steel.
The latest order to finance exports is part of instructions from the Chinese central bank and financial regulators to lenders to support the overhaul of state-owned steel and coal industries.
Beijing is trying to shrink bloated companies, many of them state-owned, in industries including steel, coal, glass, cement and aluminum in which supply exceeds demand. That has led to price-cutting wars and heavy losses.
Last month, Washington announced anti-dumping tariffs of up to 266 per cent on some Chinese steel.
Britain’s government faces pressure to act after Tata Steel cited low-cost Chinese competition when it announced plans this month to sell money-losing operations there that employ 20,000 people…

LONDON – The Latest on financial markets (all times local):
11:40 a.m.
European stock markets are giving up some of this week’s gains ahead of the outcome of the latest policy meeting of the European Central Bank.
Though the bank is not expected to announce any further stimulus measures, traders will be closely monitoring the comments of ECB President Mario Draghi at his subsequent news conference.
Joshua Mahony, market analyst at IG, says “an element of hesitancy is evident within Europe ahead of a clear event risk with the ECB.”
Many of Draghi’s news conferences have prompted some big reactions in markets, most clearly with regard to the euro. Traders are wondering whether Draghi will try to talk the euro down, possibly by hinting at possible further measures to boost the eurozone economy.
Given that uncertainty, stocks are faltering, with Germany’s DAX down 0.4 per cent at 10,376 and France’s CAC-40 0.6 per cent lower at 4,564. The euro meanwhile was flat at $1…
