What is short-term disability insurance?

Short-term disability (STD) insurance provides income for someone over a short period of time if they can’t work because they’re ill or injured, have been in an accident, or are in the hospital. STD insurance is often offered by employers as part of their workplace benefits package. It’s not the same thing as employment insurance (more on this below).
Many Canadians lack disability insurance coverage. In 2018, an RBC Insurance survey found that fewer than half of Canadians had disability insurance through their employee benefits. Among those who didn’t, 84% hadn’t purchased it privately, either. If you’re in this boat, you may want to explore your options. Hopefully you’ll never need to make a claim, but life happens—and not having disability insurance can put you and your family at great financial risk.
