B.C. to bring in extra tax for foreign real estate buyersVANCOUVER – Foreign nationals who buy real estate in Metro Vancouver would pay an additional property transfer tax of 15 per cent under legislation being brought in today by the British Columbia government.
Finance Minister Mike de Jong introduced the tax as part of legislation aimed at addressing low vacancy rates and high real estate prices in southern B.C.

The government says the additional tax will take effect Aug. 2 and will apply to foreign buyers registering the purchase of residential homes in Metro Vancouver, excluding treaty lands in the Tsawwassen First Nation.
De Jong says the additional tax on a $2-million home would amount to $300,000.
He says recent government housing data indicates foreign nationals spent more than $1 billion on B.C. property between June 10 and July 14, with 86 per cent being made on purchases in the Lower Mainland area…

CARACAS, Venezuela – Venezuela is getting some financial relief as it burns through foreign reserves to pay for imports of badly needed food and medicine.
On Monday, the Latin American Reserve Fund said it approved a three-year-loan of $482 million for Venezuela*s central bank.
The loan represents about 5 per cent of the central bank*s reserves, which have plunged to a 13-year low as a collapse in oil prices forces the government to scramble for hard currency amid widespread shortages of basic goods.
Venezuela*s opposition has questioned the legality of the loan since it didn’t have the blessing of congress. But the Colombia-based multilateral lender, which was created by regional governments in the 1970s to assist members in time of financial stress, said Venezuela*s Supreme Court signed off on the request.
