NEW YORK, N.Y. – Teen retailer Aeropostale says it’s cutting costs and jobs amid a yearslong sales slump.
The New York company said Tuesday it expects to cut expenses by $35 million to $40 million a year starting in fiscal 2016 and will slash its corporate staff by 13 per cent, or 100 jobs, by the end of January.
CEO Julian Geiger is also giving back 1 million stock options so Aeropostale can give them to other employees in an effort to keep them with the company.
“Fast fashion” outfits like H&M and Forever 21 have become more popular with teens than stores like Aeropostale, Abercrombie & Fitch and American Eagle Outfitters.
Aeropostale’s shares have lost 92 per cent of their value in the past 12 months and the stock hasn’t touched above $1 since September.

EDMONTON – Alberta Premier Rachel Notley is firing back at celebrity financial guru Kevin O’Leary.
O’Leary, formerly of CBC-TV’s “Dragon’s Den,” has said he is so concerned about what Notley’s NDP government is doing to Alberta’s economy, he’ll invest $1 million in the oilpatch if she’ll quit.
Notley says the last time businessmen spoke out against her she became premier.
She was referring to five Alberta corporate leaders with ties to the Progressive Conservatives who held a news conference just before last May’s provincial election.
The five, whom Notley nicknamed “The Monopoly Men,” warned against voting for the NDP and complained that businesses always get the short end of the tax stick.
Notley says if O’Leary wants to attack her the same way, she has one response: “Bring it on.”

Why you should pay for insurance annuallyAlmost everyone pays their insurance premiums monthly, but according to Chad Larmond of Larmond Risk Management Insurance, that’s not wise. “By paying annually, you will save 7% to 9%,” he says. There are three things working against you when you pay monthly. First, there is an administrative cost to process your premiums. Second, insurance companies charge you for the time they have to wait to get your money. Third, it’s an opportunity for insurance companies to profit from people’s aversion to paying premiums: People will happily pay more for the appearance of keeping their payments low. So if you’ve got the cash on hand, phone up your insurance provider and ask to pay your premiums annually. You can go out for a nice meal with the money you saved.
