BANGKOK – World stock markets fluctuated Monday, weighed down by uncertainty over whether a phaseout of the Federal Reserve’s monetary stimulus program is imminent.
In early European trading, Germany’s DAX fell 0.3 per cent to 8,391.48. France’s CAC-40 lost 0.7 per cent to 4,040.91. Markets in Britain were closed for a holiday. Wall Street also looked set for losses, with Dow Jones industrial futures falling 0.1 per cent to 14,970. S&P 500 futures lost 0.1 per cent to 1,659.80.
Data released Friday that showed a drop in new home sales raised questions about the strength of the recovery in the U.S. housing market, a key piece of the overall economy. That led to speculation that the Fed might stick with its current monetary stimulus or only reduce it very gradually.
The Fed has been mopping up government bonds and securities to the tune of $85 billion a month. That has held down long-term interest rates and made more money available for lending.
Recent data pointing toward an improved economy has led to speculation that the Fed would begin phasing out the program as early as next month…

New Trade: Long Facebook ($FB) & Short Rackspace Hosting (RAX)
– IntelligentSpeculator.net
It was another good for my long & short trades with a few different things happening including the very nice rise in Microsoft (MSFT) on Friday when CEO Steve Ballmer announced he would resign within 12 months. Not sure how it feels when a stock jumps huge when you announce that you’re leaving but as someone with a long position, I was thrilled. Last week, I was a bit late updating my positions and ended up noticing that I was long Priceline (PCLN) in 2 separate trades. I’m closing out one of them today which is my most profitable live trade.Long Priceline (PCLN) & Short AOL (AOL) currently stands at +31,97% and will be closed on today’s opening.
In its place, I will open a new trade, my last one of this year. I’ve explained in the past why opening new long & short trades near year-end made little sense to me and I’m sticking to that. So today will be my 24th and final long & short trade of 2013. I’ll have more than enough time to review how they’ve done but in the meantime let’s get to today’s trade:
Today I’m trading two tech stocks that have comparable stock prices and earnings per share…
