Living Single in Retirement: Are You Prepared?Many women picture their retirement years as a time when they will have more time to spend with their spouse or partner. The reality is that many senior women are living single in retirement. Without a carefully thought out financial plan in place, you may find that your “Golden Years” not be quite as shiny as you had originally hoped for or anticipated.
The life expectancy for Canadian men is 78.3 years for men and 83.0 years for women. It’s not unreasonable to assume that many women will spend at least a few years on their own. Almost 50 percent of women over the age of 65 are widows and this number increases to 75 percent of women in the 75-and-older age group. The average age when a woman loses her spouse or partner is 56.
