How much more CPP would I get doing this? How do I find out?
—Leona
A: CPP pension splitting is available to spouses who are applying to receive the Canada Pension Plan as a means to equalize their retirement incomes. But even those with former spouses should be aware of how they can proactively ensure that they are getting the CPP benefits that they deserve.
Contributions that were made by you and your former spouse while you were living together may be eligible to split and may result in an increase in your pension if you contributed less than your spouse during those years, Leona. In much the same way assets may be split in the event of a marriage breakdown, future pension entitlement–whether a private pension or the CPP–are also relevant for purposes of a post-marriage equalization.
Ask a Planner: Leave your question for Jason Heath »
The relevant period of cohabitation for purposes of the pension split does not include:
– when one of you was younger than age 18;
– when one of you was older than age 69; or
– when one of you was already receiving the CPP retirement pension…

The RRSP deadline for the 2015 tax year is approaching quickly. If you have not made your contribution for the year or you want to catch up on your unused contribution room, you may want to consider taking out an RRSP loan. This strategy can help to maximize your contribution and give the funds in your plan more time to grow on a tax-free basis. Will this strategy work for you?
Why an RRSP Loan May Work for You
Taking out an RRSP loan isn’t the right financial move for everyone. Here are some scenarios where it could be to your benefit.

You just don’t have the cash to make an RRSP contribution,
Maximizing your RRSP contribution would help decrease your taxes owed and might get you a healthy tax rebate.
You are able to your tax refund to pay down the RRSP loan to eliminate it completely, making the interest costs to carry the loan almost nil.
You use the rebate to pay down your high interest rate loans.
The benefit of tax-deferred growth through the power of compounding would exceed your cost of borrowing…

RRSP contribution levels among Canadians have remained steady from last year, finds a BMO survey.
The bank says 53% of Canadians contributed to their RRSP before the February 29 deadline, down from 57% this time last year and 65% in 2014.
While the number of Canadians who contributed is down slightly from last year, the amount that Canadians have contributed has increased. On average, Canadians contributed $4,117 this year, compared to $3,737 in 2015 and $3,518 in 2014.
RRSP vs TFSA: Which one is right for you? »
Of the people surveyed by BMO, 42% reported that market volatility played no role while 37% stated that it did; 19% indicated that market volatility caused them to contribute more, while 18% said they contributed less.
The survey didn’t address what role 2015’s $10,000 TFSA contribution allowance had in changing how much people contributed to their registered plans.

Survey methodology
The survey was conducted by Pollara with an online sample of 1,000 Canadians 18 years of age and over, between February 22th and 24th, 2016…

I will have a pension when I retire and I have an RRSP.
When I retire at age 70, I believe I will have to start withdraw from my RRSP.
Because I already have a pension, will my monthly CPP payout be reduced?
—Gisele
A: I find that a lot of Canadians are confused when it comes to their retirement income, Gisele. So you are definitely not alone. I’m going to try to clarify your concerns.
First, I’ll comment on receiving the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) before you retire, as this is an area that most people don’t understand. If you start your CPP retirement pension between age 60 and 65–as you did–you have to continue to contribute to the CPP while you are working. If you are between age 65 and 70, you have the option to opt out of contributing or you can continue to contribute. Contributions made after you begin your CPP will enhance your monthly pension through the Post-Retirement Benefit (PRB).
Continuing to contribute may provide a good “return on investment” in particular for conservative investors, those who expect a long life expectancy or married Canadians whose spouse is younger or who won’t receive the full CPP retirement pension themselves…

Manulife Financial (TSX:MFC) says that Canadian investors have lost confidence in mutual funds, exchange-traded funds and balanced mutual funds over the past six months.
It also suggests that housing is seen as a less attractive investment, while confidence in fixed income investments has stayed about the same.
The report is based on Manulife’s semi-annual index of investor sentiment, which dropped to 16 in December from 19 last May.
Investors: Don’t do dumb stuff when it gets hard »
The index is based on investor views on a range of asset classes as well as their confidence in these areas.
Regionally, investors in Ontario and the Atlantic provinces were the most optimistic with a score of 20, while Quebec ranked lowest at nine. Alberta was second lowest at 14.
The skittishness among investors comes as stock markets have taken a beating and Canadians head toward the RRSP contribution deadline on Feb…

Last time, we talked about the 5 RRSP pitfalls that can keep you from getting the maximum benefit from your savings. They aren’t the only ones you need to be concerned with when making decisions about how to plan for a secure future. Making a simple error now can have far-reaching consequences in years to come. Find out how to avoid even more RRSP pitfalls and have more funds available to you in retirement.
More RRSP Pitfalls to Avoid in 2016
1. Having Too Many Financial Accounts
If your RRSPs are spread out over several financial institutions, it can create havoc in managing your overall portfolio and attaining your financial goals. You may also end up paying extra account fees.
Consolidate all your RRSPs into one account instead. This step should provide you with peace of mind that your financial advisor fully understands all your holdings and that your assets are properly diversified to reduce risk. You will also get the benefit that your financial goals are understood, making your retirement reality fit the picture you have in your mind…

The Association of Canadian Pension Management is welcoming today’s announcement of a one-year delay to the Ontario Retirement Pension Plan.
“We welcome it,” says ACPM chief executive officer Bryan Hocking, calling it a “wise” move.
“I think they’ve had enough input from a number of different organizations and companies that are all saying the same thing at this point,” he notes, referring to a growing number of calls in recent weeks to delay the ORPP by one year.
In a speech at the Empire Club today, Finance Minister Charles Sousa announced the province would be delaying the ORPP by one year. As a result, large corporations will still have to register with the ORPP as of Jan. 1, 2017, but won’t have to start remitting premiums until Jan. 1, 2018. Under the original schedule, premiums were to apply to large companies as of 2017 with the ORPP continuing to roll out in stages until Jan. 1, 2020.
Registered Retirement Savings Plans (RRSPs) can be a way to save for the retirement lifestyle you want. However, there are RRSP pitfalls that have financial consequences that you definitely want to avoid when planning for this time in your life.
RRSP Pitfalls and How to Avoid Them in 2016
Failing to Review your RRSP Beneficiaries
If you started contributing to your RRSPs many years ago it’s probably time to review the beneficiaries on your plan. If you had named a parent or your estate and have since gotten married or are in a common-law relationship, it makes good tax sense to name your spouse as the beneficiary. If you have been divorced, you may need to remove your former spouse as the beneficiary. In a situation where you have a financially dependent child or grandchild, you might consider naming them. Naming the right beneficiary is important to ensure the funds are transferred without directly to the person you choose without incurring taxes.
RRSP Withdrawal Rates That Put your Government Pension Benefits at Risk
One major disadvantage of RRSPs is the tax consequence when you withdraw money from your plan…

Ask advisors for their top retirement savings tip and chances are you’ll hear the following: Set a goal and stick with it. Sounds simple enough, right? What they don’t tell you is that life often gets in the way of a well thought-out plan. The reality is, your financial objectives will require constant adjustments as you get older. The way twenty-somethings think of retirement will change significantly once they hit their 30s. Similarly, a 40-year-old who’s getting closer to the golden years will have different priorities than a 50- or 60-year-old who’s in the final sprint.
Complicating things further is that in today’s world of low interest rates, robo-advisors and tax-free savings accounts (TFSAs), decades-old savings rules are no longer applicable. Is the RRSP still the best long-term savings vehicle for Canadians? Hard to say. Are traditional investment firms better than these newfangled robo-advisors? It depends. Should you invest more in bonds as you age? Not necessarily…

Erin Richard wonders if she’s better off buying mutual funds through the bank or a robo-advisor. For her, it’s a question of deciding between access to better service versus lower-cost funds.
Shortly after Erin Richard’s boyfriend got down on one knee and popped the big question last November, the public relations professional and her fiancé wisely had a frank discussion about money. But it wasn’t the typical talk that most twenty-somethings have, which usually revolves around whether or not to open a joint account, or how much one partner spends versus the other. Instead, the Toronto couple debated where they want to put their retirement savings: with a bank, or with one of Canada’s recently launched robo-advisors. The new automated digital advice services allow you to build a low-fee exchange-traded fund (ETF) portfolio, based on your risk tolerance and time horizon, through your computer screen.
At the moment, Erin, 29, has about $25,000 worth of GICs in an RRSP at her bank…

Now that RRSP season is in full swing, if you haven’t made your 2015 contribution, you should be making plans to look after this important financial task. The deadline is set for February 29, 2016. Before you make your decision about your contribution, here are some key facts about your RRSP you should know.

Facts About your RRSP You Should Know
1. How much can I contribute to my RRSP?
The maximum amount you can contribute for the 2015 tax year is:
18% of your “earned income” or $24,930 (whichever is less)
Plus your unused contribution room from previous years
Minus any company sponsored pension plan contributions
If you want to find out what your RRSP Contribution Limit is for 2015 just check on your “Notice of Assessment” sent to you annually from Revenue Canada after they have processed your previous year’s tax return. It will indicate the exact amount you may contribute to your RRSP for the current year. You can also find out how much you can contribute by calling Canada Revenue Agency’s Tax Information Phone Systems (TIPS) line at 1-800-267-6999 or just go on their website…

Eydie Wood has been a great saver her whole life, but has her investments in several different RRSPs. Would consolidating all these accounts improve her financial outlook?
Eydie Wood prides herself on her saving skills. Before retiring in 2011, the 66-year-old ex-nurse had been socking part of her paycheque away for nearly four decades and built up a nest egg that should last well into her golden years. But after that many years of savings, she’s accumulated more than just assets: Wood has three RRSP accounts with three different firms and three non-registered accounts. She wants to know how to consolidate her various accounts to make sure her various assets are all working together efficiently.
Wood’s savings journey started off like most do. When she got married in her 20s, she and her then husband wanted to save money for their futures and so they each opened an RRSP account with Investors Group. He contributed money from his earnings; she put in what she could from some part-time work while she spent most of her time raising their two daughters…

Registered Retirement Savings Plans (RRSPs) are an important part of your overall financial strategy. They allow you to invest money that will grow on a tax-free basis until it is withdrawn. To get the most out of this type of financial vehicle, you need to understand its features and benefits. To make it easier for you to follow, I’ve compiled some RRSP Do’s and Don’ts for 2016.
RRSP Do’s and Don’ts for 2016
DO make the maximum contribution, if possible.
For 2015, the maximum amount you can contribute to your RRSP is 18 percent of your earned income or $24,930, whichever is less minus your pension adjustment plus your past unused contribution room. By contributing the maximum amount each year, you will have a higher amount of savings in your plan, more money in retirement and potentially a good size tax rebate.
DO make your annual contribution at the beginning of each year.
By making your annual contribution early, you are taking advantage of the benefit of compound interest…

When you’re in the Retirement Risk Zone, as I am, the last thing you want is to watch decades of savings go down the drain in a bear market. With most markets already down 20% around the world, you could argue the damage has already been done but there are a sufficient number of pessimists out there who warn the worst case could be down still further, for a peak-to-trough decline of as much as 50%, as occurred in 2007-2008.
Capital preservation is the name of the game when you’re near or at retirement. Recall that finance professor Moshe Milevsky’s definition of the Retirement Risk Zone is the five years before and five years following your projected retirement date. I’m nearing 63 and am semi-retired so take bear markets seriously. A bear market at this stage can seriously undermine one’s future plans.
With the caveat that timing the market is next to impossible, I can describe what I’m doing personally. Much of what follows I owe to my own financial advisor, who does not wish to be identified in this article…

Under the federal government’s rules, you can decide to start collecting Canada Pension Plan (CPP) benefits as early as age 60. One of the factors to consider as you get closer to the age when you can receive your pension is your overall health. You may have to leave the paid workforce earlier than you would have preferred if your health makes it impossible for you to hold down a job. You may need to decide whether to apply for CPP disability or CPP retirement pension benefits, and this is a decision you need to think about very carefully.

CPP Disability or CPP Retirement Pension: What you Need to Know
CPP Retirement Pension Benefits
If you decide to apply for CPP benefits at age 60, you will receive less than if you had waited until age 65. The maximum amount you could receive from CPP at age 65 is $1,092.50. The average amount paid out to a 65-year-old recipient is $629.33.
Applying early means your benefit will be reduced by 0.5 percent for each month you received it before age 65 (pre 2012 rules)…

TORONTO – The Conference Board of Canada says the proposed Ontario Retirement Pension Plan will mean long-term increases in income that offset the small negative effect on the economy over the near-to-medium term.
In a cost-benefit analysis of the Liberal government’s pension plan, the Conference Board says the increase in mandatory savings initially results in a period of reduced household spending as pension contributions lower family income.
The negative effect on Ontario’s GDP in the near term is partially offset by the fact that individuals are expected to reduce their RRSP contributions when they start paying into Ontario’s pension plan.
ORPP: Low income, part-time workers to take home less »
The Conference Board — an independent, not-for-profit applied research organization — says the impact on overall real GDP is also offset by a fall in imports as less household spending is used to buy foreign goods and services.
Expected decreases in Employment Insurance and Workplace Safety and Insurance Board payroll premiums “further mitigate the short-term economic impact” of the Ontario Retirement Pension Plan…

As the last days of 2015 wind down and we look forward to spending time with friends and family over the Holiday Season, our thoughts may not necessarily be focused on financial planning. The truth is that we should always be vigilant about our money matters. Will you use the countdown to 2016 to review your financial matters?
Review your Financial Matters: Are your Savings on Track for the New Year?
The end of the year is a good time to take stock of our current financial situation and make a plan to budget for our 2016 contributions to our savings plans: Tax-free Savings Account (TFSA), Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP), and Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP).
Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP)
The maximum RRSP limit for 2015 is $24,930.00.00. In addition to your allowable annual contribution amount you can carry forward any unused contribution from 1994-2014. Depending on your tax bracket, maximizing your total RRSP room can potentially create a sizeable tax rebate…

The vast majority of Canadians will not be affected by the new tax bracket for income over $200,000 a year, but everyone will see their tax-free savings account contribution limit be reduced back to $5,500 for 2016.
Combined with the new lower tax rate for income between $45,282 and $90,563, even those who aren’t in the top one per cent of income-earners should take a look at their finances to ensure they’re on track.
Peter Bowen, vice-president of tax and retirement research and solutions at Fidelity Investments, says for many people this might be the most important tax planning season they’ve ever had.
“With the changes just implemented both to tax rates and TFSAs, everybody needs to take care to make sure their tax planning is right for their own situation,” he said. “We always encourage people to get financial advice, but with these changes in place, it is more important than ever…

One option you can consider to free up some much-needed cash to fund a comfortable retirement is to sell your house. This can make good financial sense on paper, but the decision is not as simple as simply contacting real estate agent and putting a sign on the lawn.
Your home holds many memories of times spent with loved ones. If you are thinking of selling the place where you raised your family or lived with a beloved spouse who has passed on, it can be very difficult to move on.
There is more than one solution to this issue, though. Before you make any decision, consider you options carefully to take into account your short and long-term financial needs.
Alternatives for a Comfortable Retirement When you Don’t Want to Sell your House
Take out a Reverse Mortgage
Many older Canadians have seen the value of their homes increase significantly over the years, and taking out a reverse mortgage is a way to access some of the equity while retaining ownership and control of the property. This type of plan is available to Canadians aged 55 and older…

I’m a CEO and I’m a baby boomer. The statistics tell me I’m not alone: a significant chunk of the 2.3 million SMEs in Canada are run by boomers on the verge of retirement.

We are in the midst of a serious succession challenge that needs to be tackled head on.

The problem is that right now, for every two retiring senior executives, there is only one suitable successor waiting in the wings. And the ratio is even bigger for SMEs. Unlike larger companies, we simply don’t have the huge pool of candidates coming up through the ranks.

Add to this, the constant risk of losing our limited top talent to south-of-the-border competitors. So it’s not surprising that we are in the midst of a serious succession challenge that needs to be tackled head on.

Many of these potential successors are millennials — that generation my fellow boomers take great pleasure in maligning. It would seem that a full 54 per cent of my peers consider these twenty and thirty-somethings difficult to lead and difficult to engage…

TORONTO – Half of Canadian parents say they would postpone retirement because of concerns about the financial future of their children.
In a a new report from BMO Wealth Management, Canadian parents with children aged 18 to 24 said they were willing to trade some of their own financial security to help out their kids in a changing economy.
Half said they would be willing to retire later than planned, one third said they would save less for retirement, and 22 per cent said they would take on debt.
Roughly the same proportion who said they would retire later than planned said they received little or no support from their parents when they were young adults themselves.
Can I retire early and travel the world? »
The biggest financial concern for parents about their children was financial problems caused by debt, followed by difficulties achieving financial independence and insufficient employment.
The so-called millennial generation of those born after 1980 faces different economic realities than their parents, especially after the 2008 financial crisis…

OTTAWA – Big pension funds use investment policy statements to help guide their portfolios, but even though you aren’t managing billions, advisers say you probably should use one too.
A formal investment policy statement is not a financial plan, but should be complementary to one.
Ilana Schonwetter, an investment adviser at Blue Shore Financial in North Vancouver, B.C., says an investment policy statement should outline your overall objectives, while a financial plan handles the details of achieving those goals.
“To me it makes sure that my clients actually understand everything that we have discussed,” Schonwetter says.
“This is the point at which you can reconfirm that you’re both on the same page as far as some very key important factors that will help your relationship move forward.”
A formal investment policy should lay out why you are investing and your expected time horizon.
It should provide guidance about how money will be invested, including what kinds of investments it will hold and outline what mix of stocks and bonds you are comfortable with…

If you are like a number of Canadians who are either at or close to retirement age, a significant portion of your net worth is tied to your home. For many of us, owning our own home is a symbol of success. We remember the first house we bought, the years of forced saving which come with paying down the mortgage, and the increased cash flow when we don’t have that expense in our budget any more. Now that you have finally got the mortgage monkey off your back, selling your house make any sense?
Three Retirement Scenarios for Homeowners
If you are a homeowner approaching retirement, here are three scenarios to consider:

Sell your home early on to provide cash to fund your retirement years. Many people are in the “house-rich and cash-poor category,” and this scenario can make good sense for them.
Sell your house partway through retirement. This is scenario which typically occurs for most people, as they sell their home to fund some type of assisted living arrangement.
Don’t sell the house at all…

What’s the financial state of Canadian women in their 40s?
Chatelaine asked 1,000 Canadian women between the ages of 35 and 45 to share how secure they feel about themselves as part of their This is 40(ish) project. They asked them if they’re satisfied with where they are in their careers, how prepared they are for retirement and what they would do with a windfall of cash (among many, many other things).
The results? It turns out that more than half (52%) of women consider themselves “in a fairly good position” to retire, while only 9% feel that they are well-prepared for their golden years. Another 34% say that they plan to work forever. Retirement may not feel imminent to most women in their 40s, but by the end of this pivotal decade, it certainly will.
For most people, the 40s is when pay checks climb and debt tumbles, creating some welcome financial breathing room. However, there are plenty of big ticket savings items that women in their 40s must deal with: saving for their kids’ education and paying down their mortgage…

If you are at or close to the age where you are planning to retire, you may be concerned about whether you will be able to generate enough income to give you the lifestyle you want. Being aware of the 5 key risks to your retirement income and making sure that you are protecting yourself will go a long way toward helping you to have the type of retirement that you want.

Risks to your Retirement Income
1. Canadians are living longer, healthier lives in retirement.
Being able to enjoy longer healthier life after work is a good thing, but it means that it’s reasonable to expect that one or both members of a couple who are aged 65 will live to age 90. If you are thinking of early retirement as an option for you, it means that you will need to have a way to fund 25-30 years of income after you stop working.
2. Inflation eats away at your purchasing power.
Inflation is a major threat to retirement plans. While it is not likely that we will see inflation rates increase to 1970s levels, a relatively modest annual rate of even 2 percent over a 25-year retirement period can erode a retiree’s purchasing power by 40 percent…
