Tracking our spend on the American Express Cobalt Card to see how we fare with the $30K cap on 5x points - month 2Not only does Rewards Canada rank the American Express Cobalt Card as the number one travel rewards credit card in Canada but it is also the number one card in our own wallets. Since it was introduced in late 2017 the card has been the one to match in terms of earning points. However since it is so good at earning points in the Eats & Drinks category American Express found themselves in a bit of a pickle. I even recommended going to the grocery store to buy gift cards for places you would shop at where you would only earn 1 point on this card or maybe 2 points on some other card.  The fact that you could do this didn’t go unnoticed by some people in the miles and points community, namely manufactured spenders. Word is some people were putting through four figures on their card everyday at grocery stores buying prepaid cards that could be cashed out to pay down the balance on the card…

New increased sign up bonus of up to 30,000 points for the MBNA Rewards World Elite MastercardEarlier in the year we saw MBNA bump the welcome bonus for the MBNA Rewards World Elite Mastercard to 20,000 points. Now as of the start of this month they further increased it by another 10,000 points. If you can meet all the requirements, that is, spend $2,000 on the card and enroll in paperless statements you’ll score 30,000 points worth $300 towards any travel.You may recall these are the cards that underwent some changes earlier in the year and late last summer. The cards were very popular up until the middle of 2018 as the points there earned could be redeemed for travel or cash back at the same rate. Some of the value was eroded when the annual fee on the World Elite Version was bumped to $120 per year from $89. This was with no increase in benefits or sign up bonus. It was also announced at that time that the redemption rate for cash back was changing in February 2019 from 2% to about 1.67%. The good news was the redemption rate for travel did not change which means it is still a really good 2% return…
