LONDON – Financial services startup Square is taking aim at cash registers across the globe, making its point-of-sale software available internationally in English, Spanish, French and Japanese.
The company, whose small cubic credit card reader can be used to turn a smartphone or a tablet into a portable sized till, had initially limited its activity to the U.S. But it is facing competition from a variety of players, including San Jose-based PayPal Inc. and Troy, Michigan-based PayAnywhere.
The global launch also marks another step in Square CEO Jack Dorsey’s effort to raise his company’s profile and build the fortune he accumulated as co-founder of the microblogging service Twitter Inc.
Square said Thursday that its app — available for Android and Apple devices — now supports 130 currencies.

News, Tips & Tricks Last week on our newly revamped U.K. site (FrequentFlyerBonuses.co.uk) we broke the news that Membership Rewards in the U.K. will begin limiting mileage transfers with three airline partners: Cathay Pacific, Etihad and Emirates. Even with their recent devaluations the purchase of these miles can turn out to be very lucrative for saving money on business class and first class travel on Star Alliance airlines…Two weeks ago, I wondered why the government wasn’t using its own analysis to justify its proposal for an EI hiring credit—even after the Parliamentary Budget Officer projected that the $550 million measure would create just 800 jobs, the government continued to defer to the analysis of the Canadian Federation of Independent Business, an industry association that represents the businesses the credit is supposed to assist.
A day later, we found out that while the government did conduct some kind of its own analysis of its own policy, it apparently hadn’t gone so far as to estimate how many jobs would be created by a policy that was touted as a job-creating measure.
And that brings us to yesterday afternoon, when Finance Minister Joe Oliver appeared before the finance committee to testify about the government’s latest budget bill.
There Mr. Oliver explained that the government had relied on the analysis of the CFIB. We know from the previous appearance of a finance official that the Finance Department has not analyzed the methodology behind that analysis…
