– RewardsCanada.ca
As we do each month we bring you the latest set Miles & More “Meilenschnaeppchen” discounted mileage awards! This month we see another good offering of economy award tickets! The offers are for departures on Lufthansa from Toronto to 85 destinations in Europe. These are good for travel between Feb 1 and Mar 15 and must be booked by Nov 1. You can redeem Miles & More miles for round trip economy class tickets on Lufthansa from Toronto to Europe for only 30,000 miles. This is a 50% discount off the normal Economy Class award ticket price of 60,000 miles. Granted the Lufthansa tickets will have fuel surcharges but this is still a pretty good deal when you look at it as a whole in terms of miles+cash outlay. Some of the economy class offers:As we mention every time they have the 50% off economy offer is that you could in theory get the tickets with grabbing a single credit that has a $120 annual fee! How so? As we usually mention in this post you can boost your Miles & More account with the Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card from American Express…Q&A with author Emma Johnson on protecting credit as a single parent

Is it safe to have $600,000 in savings invested in GICs?
– moneysense.ca

Q. I live in Manitoba and have about $600,000 invested in GICs at a local credit union. I am 63 years old, retired with a pension, no debt and no mortgage. However, I still worry about this money and it has been hard for me to find an unbiased view on its safety. Can you help?
—Glenda W.
A. I think you can relax, Glenda. Your money is safe. Credit unions in your province have the Deposit Guarantee Corporation of Manitoba which provides unlimited guarantee of all deposits. GIC’s are covered, but not stocks or mutual funds. If you were with a Canadian bank, your deposits would be covered by CDIC insurance, which protects accounts up to $100,000.
Your investment personality is risk-averse, which is totally fine. But there is one risk that you may not be factoring into your assessment: Inflation risk. Prices for food, gas and almost everything else are on the rise, but your GIC probably isn’t earning much to account for that.

Climbing CATS
Putting a price on something holds a fascination for me. That’s why I paid attention when I recently wandered into a drugstore looking to quench my thirst. I was taken aback to discover that they were selling the same brand-name pop in six different sizes and at nine different prices.
The dizzying array of possibilities started with the worst deal. A 591 ml bottle was displayed in a refrigerated section near the front of the store that went for a whopping $2.49, which is equivalent to $4.21 per litre.
You could also pick up 1 litre bottles in the same section for $2.49 each or three for $5.00 ($1.67 per litre). It’s an old trick. An outrageously high price on one item makes the simply high price on another look like a bargain by comparison.
Bigger discounts could be found at the back of the store. The best was on a six pack of 710 ml bottles that cost $2.29 per pack or $0.54 per litre. Alternately, you could pick up a case of twelve 355ml cans for $3…
