Wanted by 4 countries, Kazakh ex-banker turned dissident faces extradition from France
– canadianbusiness.com
PARIS – He is wanted in his native Kazakhstan, Ukraine and Russia. He was ordered jailed in Britain.
An opposition leader from a country that has been ruled by the same man since 1989, a former banker accused of siphoning off billions, Mukhtar Ablyazov has been jailed since police special forces seized him July 31 in the south of France. On Thursday, a judge is expected to rule on his extradition.
Courts in London have frozen his assets and issued more than $4 billion in judgments against Ablyazov, who fled Britain days just before he was convicted of contempt of court. The Kazakh is often compared with Mikhail Khodorkovsky for making his fortune during the wild post-Soviet years, then running afoul of the political leadership when he started using his wealth to bankroll the opposition.
“This is not a story about a bank. This is not a story about a theft. This is a settling of political scores,” said Peter Sahlas, a lawyer for Ablyazov.
A former energy minister once aligned with President Nursultan Nazarbayev, Ablyazov was chairman of BTA Bank when it was nationalized in 2009, one of many Kazakh financial institutions to falter after the U…

US intelligence chief discusses potential NSA oversight changes with Obama’s review panel
– canadianbusiness.com
WASHINGTON – The Obama administration says the top U.S. intelligence official has discussed potential changes to National Security Agency programs with the advisory panel recommending the changes.
Director of National Intelligence James Clapper met Tuesday with the five-member panel of intelligence and legal experts tapped by President Barack Obama. The group developed 46 tough oversight recommendations and Obama is weighing which to implement.
Among the proposals discussed in Tuesday’s meetings was ending the NSA’s massive collection of telephone data. Instead, phone companies or a third party could store the data.
Clapper’s office says the group also discussed the NSA’s weakening of commercially-used secure encryption standards. Another topic was a proposal to require greater judicial oversight for so-called national security letters that authorities use to seize financial and phone records.

2013 Financial Predictions Recap
– myownadvisor.ca
Earlier this year, largely for kicks, I wrote about 10 things I thought we would see in 2013. Now that 2013 is in our rear view mirror I thought I’d reflect on how clear my crystal ball was.
1.The S&P/TSX Composite Index will finish the year at 13,100.
Close but not quite. The index finished 2013 at 13,621.55.
2. The Dow Jones will finish the year at 13,900.
Not even close. The Dow had its biggest year in 18 years, closing 2013 at 16,576.66. For the year, the blue-chip stocks in this index were up almost 27%.
3. With renewed focus on Asia markets, RIM is the comeback business story of the year and makes the cover of Canadian Business Magazine at some point to prove it.
Unfortunately, it was far from a comeback year for this former tech giant. Research In Motion did not make the cover of CB Magazine as I predicted.
4. Crude Oil will finish the year at around $98 per barrel.
Oil finished the year close to what I predicted. Lucky guess.
5. The Canadian Dollar will finish the year at $0…
