ADB Oks 1st co-financing with China’s AIIB for Pakistan road
– canadianbusiness.com
MANILA, Philippines – The Asian Development Bank announced Friday its approval of a $100 million loan for a highway project in Pakistan, marking its first co-financing with the China-led Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank.
AIIB will provide a $100 million counterpart loan subject to its board’s approval later this month while the United Kingdom’s Department of International Development is extending a $34 million grant, ADB said. The Manila-based lender will serve as lead financier and administrator for the AIIB loan and DFID grant.
AIIB has been viewed by some as a rival to the U.S.-led World Bank and the Japan-led ADB, with suspicions China could use it to advance its influence and agenda.
ADB President Takehiko Nakao said the project will fund the remaining 64-kilometre (40-mile), four-lane section of a highway connecting the towns of Shorkot and Khanewal in Punjab province. It has strategic value to Pakistan as it supports north-south connectivity, boosts businesses and jobs, and will help cut poverty, he said…

House OKs bill to ease Puerto Rico’s debt, Senate up next
– canadianbusiness.com
WASHINGTON – A rescue package for debt-stricken Puerto Rico has cleared a major hurdle in the House and now heads to the Senate just three weeks before the island owes a $2 billion debt payment to creditors.
The House on Thursday passed legislation to create a financial control board and allow restructuring of some of Puerto Rico’s $70 billion debt. In a rare display of political unity, the bill had the support of President Barack Obama, House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., and Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.
“The Puerto Rican people are our fellow Americans. They pay our taxes, they fight in our wars. We cannot allow this to happen,” Ryan said in a floor speech just before the bill passed.
The overwhelming, bipartisan 297-127 vote in favour of the bill was a victory for Ryan, who had urged his colleagues, especially reluctant conservatives in the GOP caucus, to back the bill. He participated closely in negotiations on the legislation, which was one of the first major bills he shepherded through the House since becoming speaker last fall…
