US stock indexes close to flat in another listless day
– canadianbusiness.com
NEW YORK, N.Y. – U.S. stock indexes were at a near standstill in Friday morning trading, the latest listless move for a market that took a decidedly slow-and-steady path to record highs in recent days. Industrial stocks had the biggest declines, while telecoms rose.
KEEPING SCORE: The Standard & Poor’s 500 index was basically flat at 2,165 at 10:11 a.m. Eastern time. The Dow Jones industrial average slipped 5 points, or less than 0.1 per cent, to 18,512. The Nasdaq composite was basically flat at 5,074.
ANOTHER MILD ONE: The S&P 500 has yet to have a one-day move of 1 per cent these past two weeks, a stretch of time that took the index to a series of records. Better-than-expected reports on corporate earnings and the U.S. economy have helped drive the gains. The S&P 500 is up more than 8 per cent since June 27.
