TORONTO – The Toronto stock market was modestly higher Thursday amid dismal economic data from Europe.
The S&P/TSX composite index advanced 32.42 points to 15,295.15.
The Canadian dollar was up 0.12 of a cent to 91.72 cents US, a day ahead of the release of revised employment data for July. Statistics Canada said earlier this week it had discovered an error in the jobs data that was originally released last Friday.
U.S. indexes registered small gains as Wal-Mart cut its annual profit forecast with the Dow Jones industrials ahead 11.78 points to 16,663.58, the Nasdaq was 4.45 points ahead to 4,438.57 and the S&P 500 index climbed 2.96 points to 1,949.68.
Wal-Mart also reported net income of $4.09 billion, or $1.26 per share, compared with $4.07 billion, or $1.24 per share, in the same quarter a year ago. Ex-items, earnings were $1.21 per share, which met analysts’ expectations. Revenue rose roughly three per cent to $119.34 billion, a shade ahead of expectations for $119…

TORONTO – A Calgary company is looking to boost the profile of the world’s newest, and most controversial, currency with the launch of six more teller machines in Toronto that deal in the virtual currency Bitcoin.
“With Toronto being the main commercial centre, I think it’s a natural fit,” said Kyle Kemper, vice-president of business development with CAVITREX, a Bitcoin exchange and service provider, at the launch Tuesday in Toronto’s financial district.
“We’re flexible, dynamic and we’re on the forefront of technology and I think that’s something we can be proud of,” he added.
Kemper said the six new machines, which have been installed in select locations, brings the number of Bitcoin teller machines in Toronto to 19 and a total of 30 across Canada.
Bitcoins, created in 2009, are an international virtual currency that are traded online and not regulated by banks or a central authority. Their appeal lies in the ability to make online transactions with relative anonymity and without fees…

HOUSTON – Royal Dutch Shell says it has agreed to sell drilling rights in shale formations in Louisiana and Wyoming for $2.1 billion in two transactions.
Shell also said Thursday that it will also receive drilling rights to land in Ohio and Pennsylvania.
Shell is working to focus its onshore U.S. drilling program on a few of the more prolific formations in an effort to boost profitability. The company wrote down the value of its shale acreage in the U.S. by $2.1 billion last year amid lower natural gas prices.
Shell will sell its Pinedale acreage in Wyoming to Ultra Petroleum for $925 million and 155,000 acres in the Utica and Marcellus shale formations in Ohio and Pennsylvania.
It will sell its Haynesville acreage in Louisiana Vine Oil and gas and Blackstone for $1.2 billion.
