In Hong Kong, greater meaning in Tiananmen vigil
HONG KONG — Hong Kongers are planning to hold a candlelight vigil night to mark the 1989 student-led Tiananmen Square protests.
The annual event on Thursday night takes on greater meaning for the city’s young after last autumn’s pro-democracy demonstrations sharpened their sense of unease with Beijing.
For the first time in the event’s quarter-century history, some student groups won’t be taking part and will instead hold their own memorials.
It’s a sign of the emerging rift between young and old over Hong Kong identity that took root during the Occupy Central protests.
The vigil is the only large-scale public commemoration of the victims on Chinese soil.
Hundreds and possibly thousands of unarmed protesters and onlookers were killed when tanks and soldiers entered central Beijing on June 3-4, 1989…

TORONTO – For the past two decades, developers in Canada’s hottest real estate markets have busily erected shiny new condominium towers while construction of rental buildings has stagnated.
But with the appetite for condos beginning to wane and sky-high home prices leaving home ownership out of reach for many, developers and institutional investors in Toronto and Vancouver are increasingly setting their sights on rental units.
“It’s a significant shift,” says Shaun Hildebrand, vice-president of condo research firm Urbanation.
The firm says there are eight rental buildings currently under construction and 37 more proposed in the Toronto area, containing a total of more than 11,000 units. That’s a nearly 75 per cent increase over what has been developed over the past decade, says Hildebrand.
Some Toronto projects that were originally planned as condo towers will be built as rental buildings instead, including Urbancorp’s Kingsclub condo complex on King Street West and a proposed 49-storey tower at Bloor and Sherbourne called The Selby…

TORONTO – After stagnating for two decades, construction of rental buildings is on the rise in the red-hot real estate markets of Toronto and Vancouver. Some figures on the emerging trend:
In the pipeline: There are currently eight apartment buildings, containing a total of 2,458 rental units, under construction in the Toronto area. Another 37 buildings containing 9,207 units have been proposed. That’s a nearly 75 per cent increase over the 6,723 rental units that have been built in the Greater Toronto Area since 2005.
Big ambitions: The City of Vancouver aims to have 5,000 new rental units built by 2021.
Tight rental markets: The vacancy rate in Toronto remained stable at 1.6 per cent from the fall of 2013 to the fall of 2014, according to CMHC. In Vancouver, the vacancy rate declined from 1.7 per cent to one per cent during the same period.
Soaring rents: The average monthly rent for a bachelor apartment in Toronto grew nearly three per cent to $896 between the fall of 2013 and the fall of 2014…

LONDON – Global stocks slid Thursday after a meeting between Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and the head of the European Union’s executive arm failed to yield a breakthrough on the release of vital bailout loans.
KEEPING SCORE: In Europe, Germany’s DAX fell 1.4 per cent to 11,265 while the CAC-40 in France fell 0.7 per cent to 4,949. The FTSE 100 index of leading British shares was 1.3 per cent lower at 6,859 while the Athens stock exchange was trading about 2 per cent lower in mid-day trading. Wall Street was headed for a lower opening, with both Dow futures and the broader S&P 500 futures down 0.6 per cent.
GREECE AGAIN: With time running out, there are real fears that Athens won’t secure a deal that will see it get remaining bailout funds to avoid going bankrupt. There had been high hopes that Tsipras’ meeting with Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, which ran into the early hours of Thursday, would at the least begin to show the outlines of a deal that would release the 7…
