ATHENS, Greece – Greece’s prime minister and finance minister have both insisted any sale of state assets will be handled by the agency set up for this purpose and not by any firm based abroad and run by foreign management.
Premier Antonis Samaras and Finance Minister Yannis Stournaras were responding to rumours that Greece’s creditors, unimpressed by the pace of privatizations, are pushing for a foreign-based special purpose vehicle to handle the selloffs.
Stournaras told newspaper Ethnos that he “categorically denied” that Greece’s Asset Development Fund would be moved abroad.
The fund’s two last chairmen have resigned in the past six months, one to face unrelated legal issues and the other for improper contact with the buyer of the former state betting firm OPAP.

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Vodafone says it is in advanced talks to sell its 45 per cent stake of Verizon Wireless back to the U.S. cellphone service provider for $130 billion in cash and stock, a deal which would be the second-largest on record if it goes through.
If an agreement is reached, Verizon would own its wireless business outright after buying the stake back from British cellphone company Vodafone PLC.
Vodafone said in a statement on Sunday there is no certainty that a final deal will be reached. Verizon Communications Inc. declined to comment.
The buyout, if finalized, would be second only to Vodafone’s $172 billion acquisition of Mannesmann AG in 2000, according to research firm Dealogic.
It would give Vodafone PLC additional cash to pursue its expansion ambitions in Europe. It would also give Verizon Communications the opportunity to boost its quarterly earnings, as it would no longer have to share a portion of proceeds from the nation’s No. 1 wireless carrier with Vodafone…

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The federal bankruptcy trustee in the 38 Studios case wants to explore opening a second legal front in the bid to recoup losses from the failed $75 million state investment in former Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling’s defunct video game company.
The state Economic Development Corp. last week voted to allow the trustee to use up to $150,000 in assets recovered from the company to investigate potential claims against its former officers and directors and other parties, Thomas Carlotto, an attorney for the agency, said. He said it could be a “fruitful and beneficial” course of action.
“There is the potential that he can bring in additional monies,” Carlotto said.
The EDC already is suing Schilling, other company executives and some of its own former officials over the $75 million loan guarantee the EDC board approved in 2010 to lure 38 Studios from Maynard, Mass., to Providence.
The company filed for bankruptcy last year. The state is now on the hook for about $90 million related to the deal, which was financed with bonds…
