HARTFORD, Conn. – United Technologies says its Sikorsky Aircraft division has signed a deal with Canada for the delivery of 28 maritime helicopters, ending a long and costly dispute.
The delivery of the helicopters was originally scheduled to begin in 2012. But Sikorsky and Canadian officials clashed over production, support and other issues.
Hartford-based United Technologies Corp. says Sikorsky will book sales of about $850 million and a charge of $440 million in the second quarter related to the deal. The charge will be offset by one-time gains over the course of the year so its full-year earnings outlook remains unchanged.
Canada says the deal will allow it begin retiring its fleet of Sea King helicopters in 2015.

OTTAWA – A forthcoming new report from the parliamentary budget officer is expected to show Ottawa is shortchanging Ontario to the tune of $1.2 billion under the current system of equalization payments, The Canadian Press has learned.
The report on how the federal government provides financial support to the provinces and territories for such things as health and social programs appears to confirm what Ontario has long suspected — only more so.

During the election campaign that delivered Premier Kathleen Wynne a majority government last week, the provincial Liberals accused Ottawa of slashing Ontario’s latest share of equalization payments by $641 million.
The Harper government has long insisted Ontario was receiving its fair share, based on the performance of the province’s economy…

Index investors in the US have always had it easier than Canadians, thanks to lower costs and more choices. Unfortunately, if those investors move to Canada, their plight becomes much more difficult.
Unlike Canada (and virtually every other western country), the US requires its citizens to file an annual return and potentially pay taxes even if they live abroad. The rules may apply even if you were born in Canada and have never lived in the US, since it’s possible to inherit citizenship from US-born parents. For tax purposes, “US persons” don’t even need to be citizens: they can also be Canadian green card holders or snowbirds.
Tax implications for US persons living in Canada are complex and often controversial: if you’re in this situation, you should seek help from an advisor who specializes in cross-border issues. But here’s a heads-up on two issues that have recently come up in which investors had no idea they were flirting with danger.
Don’t open a TFSA or an RESP. Tax-Free Savings Accounts (TFSAs) and Registered Education Savings Plans (RESPs) offer significant tax benefits for Canadians…
