Suncor says 2017 targets intact despite fire at Syncrude oilsands project
– canadianbusiness.com
Oil production remains offline two weeks after a fire halted operations at the Syncrude oilsands mining complex in northern Alberta but its largest owner says it still expects to meet 2017 targets.
Suncor Energy Inc. (TSX:SU) said Monday it was still on track to meet its guidance issued in November of between 680,000 and 720,000 barrels of crude per day, in part because of strong results from its other oilsands and offshore assets. The company’s forecast called for between 150,000 and 165,000 bpd this year from its 54 per cent stake in Syncrude.
Analyst Arthur Grayfer of CIBC Capital Markets said in a note Monday that Syncrude had built up a “cushion” of production by averaging more than 95 per cent of capacity in January and February, above its 2017 average forecast of 84 per cent.
Suncor said some of the impact of the unplanned outage will be offset by advancing an eight-week maintenance turnaround that was originally scheduled to begin next month.

What stocks to buy as rates rise

Think of investment sectors as neighbourhoods. If you own the best house in the worst neighbourhood, the market will assign a discount on your home’s value. Own the worst house in the best neighbourhood and you’ll enjoy a premium valuation. That’s how Barometer Capital describes its approach to investing, and investors may want to follow suit, especially if your portfolio lives in the financial district.
“The vast majority of your return comes from being in the right sector,” says Diana Avigdor, vice-president head of trading and portfolio manager at Barometer Capital, a Toronto-based wealth management firm. With interest rates climbing in the U.S. this is an important time for investors to make sure they understand which neighbourhoods they’re in.
The current rise in rates in the U.S. Is more about a normalization, after a lot of intervention to boost the economy. It’s not about an expected surge in inflation. Regardless, investors have a good window to take stock of their portfolios…

Housing affordability measures in the spring budget: Ontario finance minister
– canadianbusiness.com
Finance Minister Charles Sousa says the upcoming spring budget will include a package of measures dealing with housing affordability.
The Liberal government has promised measures to help curb rising home prices in some markets, particularly in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area.
Speculative investing in the real estate market _ buying a home in the hope of turning a profit rather than to live in it _ is believed to be one of the culprits behind the soaring house prices.
Sousa has said curbing speculative real estate purchases could help address dwindling housing affordability so that first-time buyers are able to get into the market.
Sousa also cited foreign buyers and people moving to Ontario from other jurisdictions as potential contributing factors to the housing shortage.
There’s no date set for the budget yet, but it’s expected in the coming weeks.
