Four stories in the news today, Feb. 19:
FORMER MP DEL MASTRO EXPECTED TO BE SENTENCED TODAY
Former Conservative MP Dean Del Mastro is expected to appear for sentencing today in a Lindsay, Ont., court. Del Mastro was convicted last fall of violating the Canada Elections Act during the 2008 election. He has since resigned his House of Commons seat. He faces a maximum penalty of one year in jail and a $2,000 fine on each of the three convictions.
TRIBUNAL WOULDN’T EXPEDITE APPEALS FOR ILL APPLICANTS
Dozens of Canadians suffering serious illnesses or in dire financial straits who were denied Canada Pension Plan disability benefits were refused expedited appeals in 2014. Thousands of injured or ailing Canadians have waited as long as five years to have their appeals heard. The backlog of social security cases has swelled dramatically under Ottawa’s social security tribunal.
