How Do Negative Interest Rates Work?
– ratesupermarket.ca

Bank of Canada Governor Stephen Poloz has made a bit of a name for himself as a loose cannon – from “spaghetti sauce” metaphors to branding the economy’s prospects as “atrocious”, his comments tend to make headlines. His most recent comment is no exception, as he has stated that dipping into the negatives with interest rates – a scenario reserved for dire economic times – is not completely off the table.
“The bank is now confident that Canadian financial markets could also function in a negative interest rate environment,” Poloz said while addressing an audience at the Empire Club in Toronto. The statement caught economists off guard, and has raised questions about what a negative monetary policy in Canada would look like. National Bank of Greece sells its Turkish Finansbank unit to QNB for 2.75 billion euros
– canadianbusiness.com
An NBG statement says the transaction will boost its liquidity by a total of about 3.5 billion euros, as once it is completed QNB will provide an extra 910 million euros to cover a Finansbank debt to the Greek lender.
NBG shares on the Athens stock market were trading 9 per cent up after Tuesday’s announcement, at 0.34 euros.
NBG said funds raised will be used to repay state aid worth about 2 billion euros, cut financing requirements and reduce exposure to emergency central bank liquidity.
Greece’s banks have been forced to drastically boost their capitalization as a result of the country’s acute financial crisis.
